Regardless, they demonstrated significant skill, ruthless tenacity, and just enough recklessness that they were able to be selected for mech pilot training in relatively short order. During their first outing as a fully trained mech pilot they were able to save most of their squad by providing a distraction for enemy mechs and, against all odds, somehow survived long enough for the cavalry to arrive. This not only impressed their superiors, but also drew the eye of something else, something more eldritch.
