A Visual History of the Quelmar Automaton

Automs are a form of construct servant designed originally by Colin Pendergras to defend Sneerwell. The designs would work so well, he would go on to sell automs to the rest of the realm.

About[edit | edit source]

Bluestone[edit | edit source]

Almost all Automs are built with a rune that reacts to a spatial magic emitted by a transmitter known as a Bluestone. Bluestones are a proprietary magic item created by Colin Pendergras from sapphire and Wovenstone. A bluestone can work on any autom within a 30 foot radius of the stone's user. With a few predetermined exceptions (see below), the autom will follow any commands issued by someone holding a paired bluestone without question.

History[edit | edit source]

Prototypes: Model 1[edit | edit source]

The Best Seller: Model 2[edit | edit source]

The second attempt at forging the perfect mechanical companion came in the form of the massive tanks known as Model 2. These automatons were over 6 feet tall and had a massive hammer where their right arm would be as a permanent and effective defensive measure. While these models were first tested in Sneerwell, they would be perfected after Colin got his hands on early Warforged and was able to discern how to make the Model 2 more efficient and not prone to exploding on failure.

After the perfection of the Model 2 (also known as Model 2.5), Colin was able to sell automs to any city looking for automated defenses. Colins first major business came with a church known as The Friends of Kragnux, who were looking for defenses to help them during the Second Draconic Crusades. As Colin had already sold the design plans for his Penderlock, the Church was happy to do more business with him.

However, unknown to his buyers, Colin had programmed the automs to avoid killing dragonborn, lizardfolk, and other races that were victims of the crusades. As such, Model 2.5 automs would not follow commands to take the lives of any draconic kin.

By the time The War of the Forged reached its climax in the early 740s PR, Wilgrim had long since reverse-engineered the Model 2, and he and his Levinkan allies had mass-produced the units to serve as tireless foot soldiers. Moreover, Pendergras Industries had continued to churn out the Model 2.5 to meet the demand from major cities across Quelmar, many of which collected small armies of these sleeker units for defense and peacekeeping. After the war's formal conclusion in 745 PR, many of Wilgrim's extant supply of Model 2s also found their way into the hands of city governments both within and beyond the Levinkan.

By 825 PR the Isonhound city of Seglock had a number of Automs that could be found around the city. Most notably Professor Nguyen of Seglock University could be found with his autom companion.
