Shug is one of many mythological Underdark Old Ones. Like the other powers in that pantheon, Shug's existence is merely a suggestion, and Shug is not known to directly operate or intervene in the Underdark, nor on the surface. However, despite the mystery around his existence, many cults and groups have gathered in the dark corners of the realm to worship Shug and the other Old Ones.

Shug is said to be the source of all Shoggoths, protoplasmic beings who shift and phase through a variety of psionic forms. Because of the link between the Shoggoths and Shug, Shug is sometimes pictured to be a massive formless mass of protoplasm.
