The Deep Forest: Convention Edition Cheat Sheet[edit | edit source]

Welcome to _________, a land reclaimed when the monsters, creatures, and beasts of the region drove out the colonizers. When you play, you make decisions about the community, decisions that get recorded on a map that is constantly evolving. Parts of the map are literal cartography, while other parts are symbolic. Players work together to create and steer this community, but they also play devil’s advocate and introduce problems and tensions into the game. For a long time, our monstrous home was occupied by invading humans. Now, finally, we’ve driven them off, and we’re left with this: a year of relative peace. One quiet year, with which to dismantle their settlements and reclaim our lands. Come Winter, a band of heroes will arrive and we might not survive the encounter. This is when the game will end. But we don’t know about that yet. What we know is that right now, in this moment, we monsters have an opportunity for healing and self-discovery in our deep forest, away from human eyes.

1. First ~4 people who arrive get to draw a feature & Lair on the map, add a green sticky note to track info on the feature.

2. Next ~4 people get to invent monsters+Remnant (Like or Dislike), if needed, use the Monster Deck to encourage creativity or draw monsters at random. Add a yellow sticky note for each monster. (this can always include people who circle back, people can come back and play as often as they’d like, or even hang around the table to play with others as they arrive.)

3. From that point on, everyone who comes to play gets to draw a card, working through Spring (Hearts) then Summer (Diamonds), Fall (Clubs), and Winter (Spades) a. After playing the card, either Uncover Something Old, Start a Discussion (Agree on Something), or Start a Project. b. Projects are Pink Sticky Notes + d6 counter c. Uncovered things/new features are Blue Sticky Notes d. Starting Discussion/Agreeing on Something means updating existing Sticky Notes or Likes/Dislikes and a Contempt Counter

4. The game is over as normal when the King of Spades is drawn. The map and sticky notes are then collected and added to the Quelmar Wiki.
