Verminshroud was a cloak worn by the rat demon lord Ratatrosk. After Ratatrosk was freed from Ironfell Prison, the cloak was gifted to one of their rescuers, the druid Dina.
Description[edit | edit source]
Verminshroud looks loke a ragged and worn cloak made of black silk that stirs as if hundreds of bugs are crawling beneath its folds. For thousands of years it was one of the prized treasures of the rat demon Ratatrosk.
As a three stage magic item, when a new user initially attunes to the cloak, they can only access stage 1 abilities. But if they continue to use and wear the cloak, they can unlock stages 2 and 3.
Powers and Abilities[edit | edit source]
Verminshroud[edit | edit source]
Artifact, Cloak, Requires Attunement by a Druid
When a creature first attunes to this artifact, they can access all Stage 1 abilities. At the DM's discretion after being attuned for a certain amount of time, the user can access Stage 2 and Stage 3 abilities. If a creature becomes unattuned to the item and later becomes reattuned, they could access all stage abilities they could before.
Stage 1
- Creeping Aura. You can cast infestation cantrip at will.
- Vermin Form. When you use Wild Shape or Polymorph, you may instead take the form of a Swarm of Rats. This uses one Wild Shape use.
- Vermin Resilience. You gain resistance to poison damage and advantage on saving throws against being poisoned.
Stage 2
- Enhanced Senses. You have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell, you are immune to disease, and you have darkvision out to a range of 60 feet. If you already have darkvision, wearing the cloak increases the range of your darkvision by 60 feet.
- Shroud of Skittering. While Wild Shaped, tiny insects crawl across your skin or carapace. You gain +2 AC against ranged attacks.
- Chittering Step. You can move through a creature’s space as though it were difficult terrain, leaving behind a scattering of harmless vermin, and you gain a climb speed equal to your walking speed.
Stage 3
- Undiscovered
