Cpl. Vincent "Mal" Praktesh is an aidman for the 114th Parachute Regiment, 2nd Battalion, D Company, Second Platoon. He graduated medical school twice, and used to be a surgeon. He is a player character in the Quelmwar campaign.
Physical Appearance[edit | edit source]
Vince is a fairly unassuming person, aside from missing part of his small finger. He has a fairly average build, straight brown hair, and green eyes. He wears a fairly standard airborne soldier's outfit, adorned with a few symbols to let people know that he has their back if they ever get hurt.
Personality[edit | edit source]
His unit isn't the most stable, but he tries his best to disarm the harsher personalities with humor. He's fairly laid back most of the time, but if someone's starting shit, he has no problems shooting back.
Vince used to be a surgeon, and there's some baggage that comes with that. He thinks he's better than most people, but he keeps that much to himself. Might come up if one of them actually manages to break him though.
History[edit | edit source]
Vince grew up in a medical family and took to that trade. He went to college and then medical school, got good grades, and graduated with honors. Soon after, he found himself some work in a hospital. After an incident involving a rib cage, a bone saw, a missing finger segment, and several home calls to that day's patients, he found himself without a medical license. He made his way into the army to pay for his student loans. During his time, he met Finn, before they went to separate units. Then the war started.
Early Life and Family[edit | edit source]
Vince had an uneventful childhood. He grew up in a medical family in Newfaire. His father, George, was a surgeon with a god complex and a short temper, which is to say he was a surgeon. His mother, Anastasia, was an immigrant from East Hills. She was a nurse that actually cared when she wasn't putting that ego in check, which was most of the time. His time with his father had the biggest impact on him. He intentionally taught the value of a hard day's work and doing the right thing, and unintentionally taught the problems with being an unavailable and self-righteous prick. His mother was the one who taught him to stand up for himself, and for others who can't.
For most of his time, he kept his head down and studied, but he spent his free time with his younger sister Victoria. She was fascinated with the Steel, and when their mother was able, she took them to Barry's Chippy. Vicky would later become an engineer in the Noman Navy.
After Vanya and Vika (as their mother called them) left the home, his parents moved to the countryside to retire.
Prewar Years[edit | edit source]
Vince spent most of his prewar years in college at Briargreen putting his head down and getting the work done. That being said, he has lots of interesting stories about a certain professor from medical school. When he graduated, he took up residency at a nearby hospital. To say it consumed him would be an understatement. It was all he did.
Shortly after residency, he was hired by the hospital. He did quite well for himself until he cut off part of his finger in an accident. They gave him a rather intensive patient, and he was so exhausted that he hadn't recognized it until after his shift was over. He couldn't find it on the ground, so he had everyone he worked on x-rayed, and sure enough, he left a piece of his finger in one of the patients. He took it out, and the patient lived, but he lost his medical license for it, which seems a bit unfair.
With nowhere else to turn and student loans to repay, he joined up with the Noman Army as an aidman (combat medic). That's where he met Finn. They would soon be divided into different units, and shortly after that, the war started.
The Galik Campaign[edit | edit source]
CW: He has seen the horrors of war.
Vince was one of the first Nomans into the Galik campaign. He fought there in a foreign legion from CR 46-48. The Noman government says in all of their official diplomatic channels that they didn't put boots on the ground until the siege, but that didn't stop a few soldiers from volunteering under other colors to help their allies. Vince volunteered to go overseas and fight in the Galik Campaign. He saw a good deal of combat.
The Szallinie Camp[edit | edit source]
In early CR 47, Vince was on a small section of the front was attacked heavily by Troverthian forces. His unit managed to beat them back. They saw the opportunity to counterattack, and they took it. Troverth had gotten complacent, and put a prisoner-of-war camp just a few miles behind their lines in the outskirts of a small town called Szallinie. They could see the Troverthian forces were still evacuating the camp when they first got eyes on it. They could see some of the retreating soldiers wearing Entente uniforms as they crested the hill. The Szallinie Camp is a major source of trauma for Vince, and it would be for anybody. The Troverthians performed unspeakable acts to the prisoners, and only did so when wearing the uniforms of the Entente, which they stripped from the war dead. This caused those prisoners to be unable to see their friends and liberators the same way ever again.
Mal, being a friendly face and a very skilled aidman, was sent in first to some of the cells. Most of the people there recoiled at the sight of him. One of them, thinking that he was there to perform those unspeakable acts, rushed him as he entered the cell. She tackled him and tried to take his gun. The other soldiers tried to get her off, but were unable. During the struggle, Vince took his knife and stabbed it in her neck, after which she bled out on top of him.
After conducting an investigation into the matter, his immediate superiors told him to "wash up."
Aftermath of Szallinie[edit | edit source]
Shortly after they returned to base, Vince was interrogated by Galik's intelligence. Given that he was a foreigner that killed one of their prisoners of war, they had a few questions.
He still sees that woman sometimes. He still sees the blood sometimes. He can never truly wash it off.

Powers and Abilities[edit | edit source]
The ability to constantly get last in initiative and turn what should be easy checks into FUBARs, courtesy of being played by Eric. Jokes aside, he's very good at medical aid checks.
Attacks and Weapons [edit | edit source]
He's a damn fine shooter with just about any SMG you throw at him, eventually qualifying with the highest honors for that weapon class. His personal favorite is the grease gun, at least so far.
