The Abyss is the infinitely deep and chaotic evil home of the Demons of Quelmar. Each Layer is ruled by a powerful Demon Lord.
History[edit | edit source]
When the Ruby Dragon Sardior was killed, in its death throes was opened up a pathway into the Abyss. Whether the Abyss had existed before this or was created by the dying rage of Sardior has been long debated. But now with access to Quelmar, demons from the realms of chaos were able to spill forth into the Material Plane.
The Demonic Infiltration (120-138 PR)[edit | edit source]
Demons began to slowly infiltrate the Material Plane using pathways created by ambitious Troverthian mages during Realm War I. They began to spread Abyssal corruption throughout Quelmar and pulled many humanoids into the Abyss.
The Infernal Insurrection (925 PR)[edit | edit source]
After the Demon Lord Ratatrosk killed the ferryman Charon with the aid of the Ordained, the rat lord used Charon's oar to stem the flow of the River Styx. The primary consequence of this was cutting off the Abyss from Quelmar. Every demon save for Ratatrosk disappeared from the realm, all abyssal warlocks lost their powers, and all communication with and travel to the Abyss was cut off.
Layers of the Abyss[edit | edit source]
The Gaping Maw[edit | edit source]
The Gaping Maw is said to be the 88th level of the Abyss, though it fluctuates up and down the various planes of chaos. Notably, The Gaping Maw is the home plane of Demogorgon, one of the Demon Lords of the Abyss. He resides in a massive dual-skull kingdom known as "The Screaming Jungle".
Thanatos[edit | edit source]
Nicknamed the "Belly of Death," Thanatos is the 333th layer of the Abyss. Its corrupted landscape boasts endless decay, and its residents yearn for the opportunity to drain the life force of any non-dead entity that wandered within. Any being that does perish upon Thanatos is raised as some form of undead or lesser demon within an hour's time. It is most notably the realm of the Demon Lord Orcus.
The Gutter Throne[edit | edit source]
The Gutter Throne is the Abyssal realm of the Demon Lord Ozythra. Its landscapes are built not of stone, but of swollen organs, boiling skins, and slick rivers of acidic bile that carve paths through mountains of rotting tissue. In the heart of this grotesque realm looms the throne itself, a monumental structure of bone, sinew, and stitched-together monstrosities. From this seat, Ozythra reigns as both mother and architect of horrors, birthing endless chimeric abominations from the flesh of her domain and casting them into the realm of Quelmar to spread her corruption. Demons of this realm are chimeric abominations of different monsters, twisted and mutated.
