About[edit | edit source]

Runes offer a way of placing a long lasting (and often permanent) enchantment on an inanimate target. A typical rune inscribing consists of a symbol, almost always tied directly to the spell inscribed. A rune of fireball, for instance, may look like a blazing flame. However, historians have noted that expert rune crafters can change the symbol or even hide it completely.

As runes are typically permanent, they require a specialized study of magical energy, and Runescaping can be considered a completely seperate discipline from Artificing or Spellcasting.

A Rune containing a casting of Witchbolt, used to defend an ancient burial ground and dug up in 248 CR.

History[edit | edit source]

The earliest runes recorded were attempts to synthesize or create the magical properties of Wovenstone, another form of magic often related to stone work.

Runes were a prominent form of magic in the BR Era, with the height of rune use occurring between 100 and 500 BR. Due to the long amount of time and energy required to craft runes, they began to fall out of usage as Dragons began their first war on Quelmar. By the time of the Draconic Extinction at the end of the era, runes had fallen completely out of style.

As late as 300 CR, undiscovered and ancient runes were discovered in excavated ruins.

Because of their archaic and legendary nature, many myths have arise of runes containing lost or ancient magic. Myths that have occasionally proven correct.
