Rio Martelo used to be a normal human with a constant body. Their home life was often filled with them getting into significant trouble and being punished for it in extremely cruel ways, often spearheaded by their mother. The results of these punishments include but are not limited to blindness, maiming, bruising, organ loss, and immense mental strain. When they were 18, they were slated to marry into a different house, an Aasimar by the name of Lucy de Compasso. Rio fell madly in love with Lucy, as did everyone Lucy encountered. However, Rio being their spouse and most loyal, Lucy turned Rio into a magic mirror to sit on the wall and compliment them. One day, Lucy was unhappy with their appearance and shattered the magic mirror. Rio's body 'reformed' and fired off a spell unintentionally that killed Lucy instantly. Following this, both their family and the family they married into disowned them and their body began changing on the daily. They made wooden children's toys to earn a living for about 2 years, before trying to give controlling their magic a go. |

Rio is a Variant Human Mirrorkin Sorcerer in the D&D 5e campaign Curriculum of Chaos.
Physical Appearance[edit | edit source]
Rio is a decently tall and thin person with tanned skin and long black hair, always worn in a braid. They have rainbow eyes that constantly spiral, and spiral faster when they cast spells, use their abilities, or have heightened emotions. They also wear glasses to offset their blindness. When Rio casts spells, their entire right arm becomes pieces of shattered rainbow glass, unless the spell is casted using Subtle Spell.
Personality[edit | edit source]
Rio tries to be a very social person, with a tendency to be a bit air-headed. They're incredibly direct and don't really have an off-switch. Their attitude towards life could be described as "ALL GAS, NO BREAKS, FULL SPEED AHEAD!", which proves frustrating for most others involved.
History[edit | edit source]
Languages[edit | edit source]
Common, Celestial, Elvish
Powers and Abilities[edit | edit source]
Rio has the ability to copy other people's specialties. If a humanoid is within 60 feet of them, Rio can copy a proficiency, natural weapon, sense, speed, or mannerism that this humanoid may have. Their body replicates this by shattering pieces of themselves into rainbow glass and reconstructing the glass into the part that is needed for said attribute. Rio can also take spells that have been casted on them and learn them temporarily, being able to cast them in the same way as the caster.
Attacks and Weapons [edit | edit source]
Rio primarily relies on their magic to fight, namely the spells Ice Knife, Fire Bolt, and Mind Sliver.
Incidents[edit | edit source]
The following is a list of incidents or otherwise majorly unfortunate events that have happened in Rio's life. These occur on a somewhat regular basis.
- The Dungeon
- As punishment for certain things, Rio was often locked in a dungeon with starving monsters to frighten and intimidate them. The list of monsters, in order, are as follows:
- A mind flayer
- A basilisk
- A manticore
- A young remorhaz
- A displacer beast
- As punishment for certain things, Rio was often locked in a dungeon with starving monsters to frighten and intimidate them. The list of monsters, in order, are as follows:
- The Shattering
- The time Rio, as a magic mirror, was shattered and used a wild magic surge for the first time, killing their partner.
- The Draconic Fire Incident
- Rio's first death, at the hands of fellow first-year student Axolotl. They were revived by Nora Ann Wu.
- The Mirror-ball Incident
- The time Rio surged 11 times in a row, resulting in them flying in the air surrounded by blinding rainbow light and fog. This rendered them essentially bedridden from pain for almost a full day.
- The Aerojaunt Fireball Incident
- The time Rio's wild magic resulted in a casting of fireball centered on themselves, killing them instantly. They were revived by Rosimyffenbip “Rosie” Wuzfeddlims.
- The Bridge Fireball Incident
- The time Rio's wild magic resulted in a casting of fireball centered on themselves, dealing significant harm to them but not killing them. They were brought to the infirmary by Grimmwood Drifting by Jorrmungandr, where they made a full recovery.
- The Tavern Incident
- Rio was present during the desecration of the Bow's End Tavern due to a fire elemental. They were severely wounded and were brought to the infirmary by Drazhomir Yarnask.

INCIDENT REPORT: THE BASILISK[edit | edit source]
They locked me in with the beast
First thing in the morning
A frozen chill ran across my face
The last thing I saw
My roof
My mother
The door
One
I knew enough about the beast
Enough to keep my eyes closed
So I didn't freeze
But I was always frozen
Stuck to the wall
There were few noises
A thud with every step
A grumble and a growl
A rattling of chains
My whimpers
My tears hitting the floor
My staggered breathing
The knock for food
The roar at the knock
The scream at the roar
The food hitting my chest
It spilling onto the floor
My desperate scrambling
More tears
Everything on repeat
Until I passed out
Two
Eyes open
Sight
Remembrance
Eyes closed
Faith in self?
Never existed
Out with the shirt
In with the blindfold
It has my faith
It carries on when I can't
Stable
Noises again
Same as before
No tears this time
No crying
No screaming
Why are my eyes closed?
If this is my life
If this is what they gave me
Then maybe
It's ok to be stone
A statue of failure
But I don't want to die
I pass out again
Three
I'm awake
I can't see
My faith was well placed
I've learned to eat in darkness
I've learned to hide in darkness
But the beast is still here
Waiting
For an opportunity
That'll never come
As much as I want it to
Until the door opens
I feel a tug on my shoulder
The blindfold falls
The darkness stays

INCIDENT REPORT: Triumph.[edit | edit source]
Another meaningless punishment
Another lesson I had to learn
Another pointless torture
The last of its kind
The drum beats
They drag me to the dungeon
They give me sight
So I can see my warden
A cat with tendrils
And duplicate images
Can't be sure
Which one is which
After a day
I had a fork
I had a weapon
I had bait
I starved for a day
I hid myself
I laid out my trap
And it dropped its guard
I remember the sound of its scream.
Its body sustained me
