Most of the time, these days, Patches can be seen wearing an old, but well maintained suit of chain mail armor that they’ve been able to scavenge together over their travels and interactions. When not in armor, they will wear simple, common clothing of similar condition to the armor. The only thing that really stands out on them is a small rag doll wearing a yellow apron dress. The rag doll has been a constant companion for Patches from shortly after they became whatever they are now. |

Patches Vanderburg is their current name or has much of a name as they ever have had. The name came out of an early conversation with an elderly, foreign trader they rescued from a couple of smaller demons. The old man thanked Patches, introduced himself as Gregor Van Gelderland and asked their (Patches’s) name. They had no idea how to answer this question. They had not need one while traveling, fighting and surviving alone. And the problem was not that they didn’t A name, it was that they had too many names, and all of them shouting at once in their head needing to be heard. Seeing their distress, Gregor chimed in saying, “Calm yourself, it’s ok. Names can be a real sticky issue, but you need something to be called. ‘Hey you’ isn’t individual enough.” “We are not sure we are an individual, but yes this body needs a name to interact with other people in the world with.”, Patches replied. “First of all, for other people’s comfort, try to use ‘I, myself, me, and alike.’ Second, it seems to me that you’re made up bits of a bunch of other people. No offense meant. Like a hodgepodge or a patchwork quilt. That’s it’s! Patches!”, Gregor exclaimed. “We like it, sorry I mean, I like it. It is descriptive without being off putting.”, Patches agreed. “Ah, but what about a last name? Most people I’ve heard of have last name, especially the important people. Their full names seem to go on for three, four or five separate parts.”, the old man goes on expansively about different lords and ladies and their family names. Patches interrupts, “Hold on, I’m no lords or lady, as far as we know.” “It doesn’t need to be anything grandiose. Take my last name as an example, Van Gelderland. It’s just another descriptor saying I’m from Gelderland.” “Where is that, Gregor?” “Don’t worry about it. Anyways, this is about you and your name, Patches.”, Gregor countered. “I do not like talking about where we are from. It gets too painful thinking too much about The City.”, Patches replies. “Fine, of ‘The City’ or ‘Vanderburg’ in my home language.”, Gregor offers. “Sounds good, Patches Vanderburg. Pieces of the city. Nice.” Patches accepts it. Gregor hands Patches a journal and pencil and says, “here, I want you to have this. I find it of great help when trying to figure things out to write the thoughts and feelings down to better organize and understand them.” This was their first major step towards finding their self in the turmoil of voices and parts of souls within them. |

Along the way to the arboretum, Patches dispatched numerous lesser demons that they came across. These demons, most often were tormenting and killing the lucky surviving villagers. After a major demon attack nearly wiped out the whole village, survivors are hard to find, which only makes the demons all the worst when they do find a poor soul. Patches, while traveling at night days later, came to the aid of a trade caravan. Their camp was being attacked while they tried to sleep. Tails of these acts of heroism, and many more, spread quickly through the traders, caravan groups, other travelers and the remaining villages. |

Patches Vanderburg has a deep loathing for demons. They are on a holy mission to bring down vengeance upon the demons for destroying their city and the countless lives that have been lost there and since. This holy vendetta empowers Patches's very existence, for they are a product of the combined will (and flesh) of people the demons have slain crying out for justice and the end the suffering caused by them. Patches yearns to administer the divine smite that demons fear most. Patches has been following the trail of carnage left by the demons from their city that inevitably led straight to the arboretum. |

Physical Appearance[edit | edit source]
Patches Vanderburg is their current name or has much of a name as they ever have had. The name came out of an early conversation with an elderly, foreign trader they rescued from a couple of smaller demons. The old man thanked Patches, introduced himself as Gregor Van Gelderland and asked their (Patches’s) name. They had no idea how to answer this question. They had not need one while traveling, fighting and surviving alone.
Personality[edit | edit source]
Patches Vanderburg is confident in their own abilities and does what they can to instill confidence in others. They respect life. People deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. They protect those who cannot protect themselves. Patches is convinced of the significance of their destiny, and can be blind to their shortcomings and the risk of failure. Shortly after reaching the arboretum, Patches found themselves in the junkyard with the Scrappers. It seemed like a good fit, being undead and a fairly good scavenger. They seems to share Patches’s loathing of the Abyssal and have no end of interesting items around. There always seems to be something going on, all hours of the day or night, and randomly there will be an explosion. The activity and noise helps Patches to manage the chaos in their own head. Sometimes they are sent to revive Cilvdy’s body after the bigger explosions. That is always interesting. One of the first few days there Patches was handed an extension questionnaire to fill out and return to Cilvdy. It was supposed to be part of the “hiring process.” Patches takes it to fill out of their break.
Beyond is what it said and how Patches answers.
New Employee Questionnaire
1. Of what benefit could you be to the Scrappers?
I am resourceful, fairly good at scavenging, do not use much in resources, and am good at defending an area, especially from demon attacks. I hate demons.
2. Why did you choose to join the Scrappers?
The Scrappers seemed the most welcoming to the undead. My skill set seemed to best fix here and I find the activity level to be a good fit for me.
3. What is your real, birth name, what name do you use, if not that?
I am not sure how this question would have any baring on employment here. But since you asked, I have many “birth names”, but I am not any one of them anymore. I go by Patches Vanderburg because that is who and what I am.
4. If you have a nickname, what is it, and where did you get it?
I have been called all manor an variety of Patches, Hodgepodge, Mixxy, and alike. Whatever people I interact with come up with so they feel more comfortable around me.
5. What do you look like? (include height, weight, hair, eyes, skin, apparent age, and distinguishing features)
You have seen me. I stand out, but fine. I look like dozens of people’s bits and pieces were merged into one inconsistent and uncoordinated person.
6. How do you dress most of the time?
In old, secondhand, but well maintained and cleaned armor. I plan to upgrade it as soon as I can save up the money.
7. How do you learn best? Observation? Participation? Trial and error? Rumination and cogitation? Consulting experts? Writing?
Now this activity seems relevant to employment. So far it seems that I do best with hands on learning and then consulting experts, when available.
8. How open are you to new ideas and information, do you change your mind frequently, based on what people have told you, or are you a traditionalist, deciding on the basis of what's always been?
This definitely seems to depend on the mindset I am in at the given time. I can be anywhere along the spectrum, though not erratically.
9. What was your family like?
I believe this was covered above, but so you have it here. Vanderburg is my “family name”, it means “of the city.”
10. When was the last time you saw any member of your family, and where are they now?
This seems pretty personal to be asking. I have never seen any members of my “family”, they are all gone, but I carry a piece of each of them with me all the time.
11. Do any non-family member adults stick out in your mind, and who were they, and how did you know them, and why do they stick out?
Again, not sure this is important for the work. Everyone who has made me who I am now, I consider family, but my first real conversation with Gregor Gelderland helped me understand things and was very special to me. I hope he is doing well.
12. It is common for one's view of authority to develop in their adolescent years, so what is your view of authority, and what event most affected it?
First and foremost, I answer to the spirits that cry out for justice to be done on the demons that have caused such destructive and death. Otherwise, authorities are to be followed as long as they do not interfere with the goals of vengeance against the demons.
13. Did you have a previous job? If so, what was it, and did you like it? If no job previously, where did your money come from?
I have had no previous long-term jobs before this. I have protected travels, traders and alike for short periods of time. Most of them offered some kind payment afterwards. Until recently, I have been able to scavenge fir anything I need. Demon attacks leave a lot of unclaimed items in their wake.
14. What hobbies do you have?
I enjoy scavenging, taking in my surroundings and journaling.
15. What annoys you more than anything else?
Swarms of demons.
16. What habit that others have annoys you most?
An over developed sense of pride, arrogance and/or entitlement.
17. What don't you like about yourself?
My parts do not all fix together well and it can make it harder and slower to move around.
18. Do you drink or use any mind-altering substances on any kind of regular basis?
No. I am not if or how they would work with my odd construction and situation.
19. What one act in your past are you most ashamed of, and what one act in your past are you most proud of?
My lack in strategy and tactics, I fear, has cost some lives and have not served justice and life up to my potential. I am still fairly new to this and I have made big improvements thus far. I am most proud of being able to devote Wynni to the sacred cause of vengeance, hence saving her from a demonic curse.
20. What do you feel most strongly about?
Destruction and ruin to all demons.
21. Do you have any feelings in general that disturb you? If so, what are they, and why do they disturb you?
So many. The echoing emotions of rage, vengeance and lose from the victims of the demon attacks are all with me, always. I strive to sort them all out and bring them peace.
22. What deity (if any) do you follow and why?
I need no food or drinks, but the sensations are enjoyable.
23. What made you become a Scrapper?
It was the best fit for me and the best opportunity to gain resources and allies for my sacred mission.
24. What do you think of the other races?
As for as far as I am concerned, they are all one in me … to me.
25. Has anyone or anything you have ever cared about died? If so, how did you feel about it, and what happened?
One could say that I have been created from loved ones who died. I “live” for them and they live in me.
26. Do you have any bad habits? If so, what are they, and do you plan to get rid of them?
I forget to breathe, since I do not need to at all. So to begin talking I have gotten in the bad habits of needing to inhale before I initiate speaking.
27. How private of a person are you, and why?
I am somewhat private, because too many personal details seem to disturb and/or upset people
28. How do you determine if you can trust someone?
I try to study people to gain insight into if they are trustworthy or not.
