Shadow Sickness is a mental disease caused by either intense exposure to Shadowfell energies, or prolonged exposure to less intense energies.
About
Shadow Sickness that is inflicted by a powerful shadow creature also allows that creature to dominate and charm the target, taking control of their destroyed will. However, this side-effect of charm CAN be over-ridden by using other charming effects and powers, though it does not restore the creature to full health, just simply gives the "puppet strings" to another wielder.
LEVEL 1: Infected
There is a general ickyness that occurs when immediately exposed to the shadows, but it can go away naturally with time, or instantly with exposure to Moonflowers/Echemus/Moonwell/Moon stuff. Can also be fixed with a well placed Remove Curse, or a special ward, or with Fey Runes.
LEVEL 2: CHARMED
Occurs when the source of the shadows itself tries to reach into your mind while you are infected in order to take control. Takes the form of black eyes in the infected but still otherwise they still look normal, wears off quickly with high willpower, or pushed back by "overwriting" the domination with another form of charm.
LEVEL 3: LOST
Characters that go into a shadow rift, or are devoured by the avatars that emerge from the source of the darkness, or otherwise go “Too Far” into it become part of the hivemind, their original forms lost to the shadows as a “Shadow Version” of themselves is all that remains, a nebulous dark echo of their former self hell bent on serving the source of the darkness. This is irreversible unless the lost creature is exposured to the absoute most concentrated energies of purification, such as being baptised in a Crystal Moonwell.
Notable Outbreaks
The Umbral Flood
Tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of residents of Isonhound became inflicted with various levels of shadow sickness when the whole continent was plunged into the Shadowfell, creating Umbralhound.
Cure
Moon energies are known to cure Shadow Sickness, which can include potions brewed with Moonflowers, or help from a Moon Dragon or the Crystal Moonwell, an artifact of the moon clerics known as the Lunarans.
