The Nighthawk was a masked vigilante operating in the city of Newfaire and an occasional operative for the secretive organization Candela Obscura. Cloaked in darkness and driven by a relentless pursuit of justice, The Nighthawk balanced her fight against crime with investigations into arcane threats that plagued the city.

Physical Appearance

The Nighthawk

As The Nighthawk Evelyn's attire consisted of a dark bodysuit reinforced with protective armor plating, allowing for both agility and defense in combat.

Covered by a dark hood, their mask was an avian-inspired, metallic visage with a sharp, beak-like structure and glowing yellow lenses that pierce through the darkness. This mask not only obscured their identity but also served as a gas mask and communication device that distorted their voice to further hide their identity.

The Nighthawk wore armored gloves with claw-like tips, useful for both combat and scaling the city’s vertical terrain. Their belt and harness system were filled with an array of utility pouches, throwing blades, and compact weaponry, ensuring they are always prepared for any encounter. Their boots were lightweight but reinforced, allowing for near-silent movement while providing the necessary traction for swift urban traversal.

The last part of their suit was a specially designed "night stick" that served as an offensive and defensive, non-lethal weapon capable of firing both gas pellets and a grappling hook attached to a high tension spool of cable contained inside the night stick.

Caroline Hargrove

In her civilian identity as Caroline Hargrove, Evelyn had sharp, symmetrical features and an air of understated elegance. Standing at 5' 11", she possessed a powerful and athletic build honed through years of training. Her blonde hair was typically styled in soft waves, often pinned back in a simple yet refined manner. Her green eyes, keen and observant, were framed by clear-rimmed glasses that lent her a scholarly and unassuming appearance. She carried herself with a quiet confidence, her posture poised and deliberate, revealing hints of the strength she kept hidden beneath her reserved demeanor.

Her clothing, always modest yet practical , reflected her position as a Head Librarian. She favored well-fitted blouses, long skirts, and structured jackets, favoring muted earth tones and soft fabrics that blended into her professional environment. Though the garments concealed her formidable physique, those who observed her closely would note the precision of her movements and the quiet power in the way she carried herself. Whether organizing stacks of books or addressing patrons, she exuded a calm, intellectual presence that masked the vigilante who walked the city’s shadows by night.

Personality

The Nighthawk was known for her cold, calculating demeanor, prioritizing balance and justice above all else. She operated with an unshakable sense of purpose, ensuring that order prevailed over chaos. Unlike some vigilantes who were fueled by vengeance, The Nighthawk’s actions were not driven by personal satisfaction but by a firm belief in the necessity of justice. Her meticulous and strategic mind enabled her to act with precision, never allowing emotion to cloud her judgment.

To her fellow investigators within Candela Obscura, The Nighthawk appeared detached and wholly focused on the mission, often described as lacking empathy. However, this was a calculated mask—while she rarely expressed concern outwardly, she was deeply protective of the innocent and those incapable of defending themselves. Her presence was a silent reassurance to those in danger, a guardian who never wavered in the face of darkness.

Despite her seemingly solitary nature, The Nighthawk held deep respect for other masked vigilantes, particularly Mocking-Bird , Regicide, and the veteran crime fighter Hellcat. While her interactions may have been curt and pragmatic, her actions demonstrated unwavering trust and admiration for those who shared her mission. The Nighthawk valued the experience of her veteran peers while also recognizing the promise in newer crime fighters, mentoring those she deemed worthy with a rigorous but fair hand.

Reputation

The Nighthawk was both feared and revered in Newfaire. Among criminals, she was an unseen force of reckoning—ruthless, efficient, and relentless in her pursuit of justice. The underworld whispered her name in fear, while the people she protected saw her as a ghostly guardian. Though some viewed her as a necessary force for good, others saw her as dangerously unpredictable, a vigilante walking the fine line between justice and lawlessness. Law enforcement remained divided; some begrudgingly recognized her contributions, while others sought to bring her to justice, believing her extralegal actions threatened the integrity of the system.

Within Candela Obscura , she was a respected yet enigmatic figure. Though she largely worked outside their structure, her rare collaborations left a lasting impression. Investigators saw her as cold and calculating, showing little emotion, but undeniably effective. Among fellow masked vigilantes she was regarded with respect, recognizing the importance of shared purpose even if she preferred to work alone. Her legend only grew after her death, with stories of her final mission elevating her to near-mythical status—some seeing her as a martyr, others as a cautionary tale of the cost of taking justice into one’s own hands.

History

Early Life

Evelyn Monroe was born to Jonathan and Clara Monroe in Newfaire, a family known for their contributions to both medicine and the arts. Her father was a respected surgeon and pioneer in neurosurgery, while her mother was not only an artist but also a philanthropist. Clara worked tirelessly to ensure that education and access to the arts were available to all people of Newfaire, not just the wealthy elite.

She and Jonathan were champions of the underprivileged, using her influence and wealth to help bring art, music, and culture to the city's poorer districts. They worked to fund and support a free clinic in South Soffit, where individuals of all backgrounds could receive medical care regardless of their ability to pay. They also began work that would eventually lead to the construction of South Soffit’s first public library. Together, they were pillars of their community, embodying the values of compassion, selflessness, and equality.

From a young age, Evelyn showed prodigious talent as a violinist, captivating audiences and becoming a fixture in Newfaire’s cultural scene. Her future seemed destined for greatness, with major orchestras vying for her attention and as a promising career lay ahead. Clara's mentorship in the arts fostered Evelyn's love for music, and Jonathan’s influence shaped her intellectual curiosity and compassion.

The Accident

At the age of 18, Evelyn’s life was forever changed.

On the day of a highly anticipated concert at the Newfaire Conservatory, she was crossing the street, her violin tucked under her arm, when a large delivery truck struck her. The driver, exhausted from a third shift of work, failed to see Evelyn in time. The impact left her gravely injured; her last memory of the accident was the sight of her beloved violin—broken and twisted in the gutter, rain and her blood mixing together to wash over it. The driver did not survive the collision, while Evelyn was left in a coma, her body shattered.

Project Chameleon

As war broke out between Noma and East Hills, Evelyn began a long and painful road to recovery. It was during this period that Jonathan was recruited into a secretive project for the Noman Armed Forces—Project Chameleon. The project aimed to heal severely injured individuals using a combination of formulated injections and Jonathan’s work in a pioneering procedure involving the grafting of specially made copper filaments to the subjects nerves, all powered by a small electrical device housed within the body.

The Project was shrouded in secrecy, but Jonathan soon discovered its darker true purpose: to create enhanced soldiers experimenting on injured civilians and soldiers. Though Jonathan had hoped his research would provide healing and rehabilitation, he grew increasingly concerned as the project’s goals shifted toward weaponization. His objections grew vocal and he threatened to leave the project just as it drew close to its first human trial.

Jonathan’s refusal to continue participating in the project as a way to create “renewable soldiers” brought both him and the project's lead scientist, Dr. Verena Falk, under the scrutiny of the powers backing their project. It showed that Jonathan perceived he had the power to inhibit their plans. At first, The Council determined to use Jonathan’s own family against him with threats of violence. But it was clear that he was not the kind of person who would compromise his principles, even if it meant Clara and Evelyn being hurt.

So they took a different route. Through Dr. Falk offered to allow Evelyn to be the first human subject to undergo the procedure. If Jonathan remained with the project to help further its grander objectives. Torn between his values of pacifism and his ultimate dream of restoring his daughter’s health; Jonathan agreed to Falk’s terms.

Under the care of her father and Dr. Falk; Evelyn underwent a months-long series of nerve grafts and genetic alterations designed to repair her injuries and enhance her physical abilities. The science her father had developed to help heal his patients was now used to transform her into the pinnacle of human physical potential.

The experimental treatments granted her enhanced strength and agility as well as a type of adaptive muscle memory.

When Jonathan saw the results of decades of research, he was awestruck. But horror quickly set in when Dr. Falk informed him that Evelyn was to undergo further tests of her abilities to ensure that the procedure would produce the desired results in military veterans. Jonathan objected and sealed his fate.

Both Jonathan and Clara were kidnapped by spies from East Hills, who had learned of her father’s involvement in the project.

Dr. Falk, one of the lead scientists overseeing the project, along with Major Lucian Grim, informed Evelyn of the abduction, warning her that it was likely her parents would be tortured and killed. Despite their assurances that they were doing everything they could to rescue them, Evelyn was furious. She argued that their efforts were insufficient and that if they were truly doing everything possible, they would send her to help. Grim politely refused her offer to help. Seeing that he would need further convincing, Evelyn attacked him and the soldier that had accompanied him to deliver the news of her parents' capture.

She quickly overpowered the two men.

Impressed by her resolve, Grim reluctantly agreed to take her with his unit on a rescue mission.

The mission was, in fact, a trap, orchestrated by the Noman High Command. The kidnapping was never meant to be resolved—her parents had been sacrificed as part of their larger, manipulative plan to eliminate her father and draw Evelyn further into their greater designs.

When Evelyn and Grim's unit arrived, they fought hard and fast to find her parents held at gunpoint behind a soldier, trying to simply escape with his life intact. Evelyn acted without thought, a knife expertly flying from her hand to land in the soldier's throat. The sudden impact of the blade caused him to flinch and squeeze the trigger of his machine gun.

Grim arrived seconds after bullets riddled the bodies of Jonathan and Clara. Leaving them bleeding and dead on the floor of their cell.

The failure of the mission—her failure—was devastating. The deaths of her parents were pinned on her decision to oppose the military’s desire to see her trained and utilized in the war effort. This shattered any lingering doubt and solidified her resolve. Her transformation from a grieving daughter into a cold, calculated soldier began in that very moment. Evelyn, now codenamed Mockingbird, dedicated herself to becoming the perfect soldier—physically enhanced and psychologically hardened by the loss of her parents and the consequences of her own actions. While the Noman Armed Forces saw her as a tool of war, Evelyn, no… Mockingbird, became the perfect instrument of vengeance against the enemies that had taken everything from her. She would help end the war. No matter the cost.

Military Service and The Great No Man's War

Evelyn’s time during the war was marked by increasingly brutal missions as part of the 3rd Clandestine Operations Team (3rd C.O.T.), under Grim’s command. The unit was known for its ruthlessness, carrying out covert strikes deep within enemy and neutral territory. Grim and his team, including Mockingbird, Magnus Thorne (Master Sergeant) and Jacen Beck (Sergeant First Class), were tasked with eliminating key targets, destabilizing enemy forces, and, in some cases, wiping out civilian sympathizers to the Hillian war effort. As the war dragged on, their operations became more destructive, leaving a trail of carnage in their wake.

It wasn’t long before their actions caught up with them. A journalist, Meredith Murrow, was assigned to the front during the war and quickly heard of the daring missions of Grim and his team when they crossed paths once. Meredith had powerful instincts and knew a story when she saw one. So she began digging. Her eventual discovery of the team’s willingness to overcome any obstacle that would keep them from accomplishing their mission horrified her as she discovered the truth of their missions. They had committed several atrocities in the name of victory. When her paper was published in the Noman Star, it was damning. Meredith had managed to find survivors of a small village within territory occupied by Hillian forces. Grim and his team had destroyed a dam to flood an enemy stronghold, taking three villages with it. The survivor, an engineer at the dam, had warned them of the people that needed to be evacuated. Grim ignored them so as to avoid drawing attention from their enemy.

Their commanding officer, General Whitney had issued their orders and condoned their actions but chose to give them up in exchange for the safety of framing them as soldiers who had gone rogue and crossed an unforgivable line. The trio, betrayed by the very forces they had served, was brought in for trial and branded as war criminals by the Legal Enforcement Division after their missions were deemed too extreme, even by military standards.

However, before they could face punishment, the remnants of the 3rd C.O.T. were approached by a mysterious figure and were offered a way out—a chance to reshape the world, a promise to undo the injustices they had been manipulated into committing during the war. With the exception of Grim, none of them knew they had already been manipulated into committing these acts by the very people who now sought to recruit them.

Grim, eager for redemption and to finally have a hand in shaping the future, agreed to join. Supported by mysterious new benefactors and with incredible resources the trio escapes from the NAF’s custody and begin their new mission. In time, Grim was given the approval to build The Forge of Renewal, an ancient Oldfairen device that he believed could remake reality itself, bending the world to a vision of a better world. Mockingbird and Thorne, though less certain, followed Grim's lead.

As their plans neared completion, a group of Candela Obscura investigators infiltrated their operations, capturing Mockingbird and Thorne and putting an end to their attempt to remake the whole of reality.

Captivity and Escape

While in Candela’s custody, one of their members discovered that Mockingbird began to undergo therapy under the care of Dr. Eleanor Knox, a skilled psychologist with a sharp eye for manipulation. Over the course of many sessions, Dr. Knox uncovered the full extent of Mockingbird’s exploitation by the Noman Military. Though Evelyn had always believed she was fighting for justice, she learned that nearly every step of her path had been directed by unseen forces. The revelation that her parents' deaths had been orchestrated by not just the Noman High Command but by the elusive group the elusive group that had helped them escape military custody, but Grim and Dr. Falk as well. This revelation was particularly devastating.

Mockingbird’s entire existence had been a lie. She had been nothing more than tool meant to further some terrible people’s agendas and nothing more.

Evelyn eventually escaped the Pharos. With her true identity still a mystery to Candela Obscura, she had time to gain access to a trust fund left to her by her parents—money that had been locked away during the war and untouched for years. She would use this wealth to fund her own operations as a vigilante under the alias The Nighthawk, bringing her newfound resolve to a more personal, independent form of justice with the aid of an old comrade from her unit that had been discharged after being injured while saving her life, Jacen. She also took advantage of an opportunity that arose when the head librarian of the South Soffit Public Library passed away from a disease known as The Red Rash. Evelyn adopted the identity of Caroline Hargrove and (white forged documents) secured the position of Head Librarian, using her knowledge of the library’s vast, often forgotten, archives to secretly convert the sub-basement into a base of operations. Here, she could work undetected, gathering information, planning operations, and begin her mission to protect the people of Newfaire from the shadows.

Death

The Nighthawk met her end while investigating a series of arson attacks targeting retired Candela Obscura investigators and former members of the 3rd Clandestine Unit. Upon discovering a lead, she stealthily infiltrated the apartment of the serial arsonist, seeking evidence on the perpetrator’s identity. Scattered, half-burned papers detailed unknown names and ominous plans. A flicker of orange light caught her attention but it was too late.

She turned just in time to see the man with the ember eyes smiling at her.

The room ignited in a burst of flames. The building’s structure collapsed around her as fire engulfed everything. The cry that followed was strangled, lost in the crackling inferno.

That night, she lay in a hospital bed at Grand Noman Hospital, the same place where she had been born, barely recognizable to the only people in the room who had ever seen her face - Mocking-Bird and Jacen. Through the oxygen mask, her eyes, still fierce despite her failing body, reached out to her protégé.

She whispered hoarsely, "Keep fighting." before the hospital machines gave their final signal.

Here remains were given over to Candela Obscura for study to try and find a way to recreate the procedure her father had pioneered, in the hopes that it would finally help others.
