The Arboretum Marketplace

Location In the Arboretum in the Badlands of Pteris
Inhabiting Race There is no one major race.

The central market within the stadium-sized tree has most of what your adventurer might need, and related places of business include the Stables, and the mysterious Chest in the magical Conservatory, and the Junkyard.

History

As long as people have been using the ancient petrified tree as a way station along trading routes, they have been using this place as a market. The humble waystation turned into a trading hub and then into a bustling marketplace for anyone traveling through the badlands. It had taken a huge hit when the demons attacked, but is slowly coming back to life as traders and merchants find their way back.

The Stables

The Stables of the Arboretum are now available for all Badlanders! Run by Dapple the Saytr, adventurers are able to rent/buy mounts, riding tackle, and carts here. They also may house whatever mounts they may have here for a reasonable price.

Rent price: 5 sp per day with a 50 gp deposit.

Stabling price: 5 sp per day.

Animal descriptions:

  • Camel: Easily domesticated, mild tempered, pack animal. Excellent for carrying trade good long distances. Easy to care for.
  • Horse: Mild tempered. Easily domesticated. Pack animal. Good for crossing stretches of badlands.
  • Dustrunner: Skittish, flighty, easily spooked. Small and fast. Excellent for speed. Easy to care for. Can only be ridden by small adventurers.
  • Monitor Lizard: Bad tempered and difficult to tame. Mainly used for traveling in the badlands. Able to move quickly up plateaus and rock faces. Carnivores.
  • Elephant: Kind, intelligent, strong, a pack animal for great distances and for riding into war. Need a lot of food.

The Chest

People first noticed the metal-plated chest among the debris in the Conservatory about a month after the attack. No one yet been able to lift it, and while some are unsettled by the chest's arrival, Jerbo, the Arboretum's head arcanist, insists that only mild caution is warranted.

The black, leather-bound book inside remains nearby, reappearing inside again when anyone tries to walk off with it. Its pages can't be torn, and all but the first few, which show a price list and a set of instructions, are blank. The instructions begin:

Chest Note: How To Use It 1) Basic Instructions The accompanying Chest will provide any Item listed on the previous page in exchange for Coin. - On an empty page of this Notebook, write the name of the Item you wish to acquire. - Return the Notebook to the Chest -- accompanied by Coin sufficient to meet the listed price. - Close and latch the lid, then reopen the Chest to find the exchange completed. - In case of overpayment, any superfluous coins will remain after the exchange, but no new coins will be added. - All sales are final.

Notable Events

Many of the things sold here in the marketplace were destroyed in the demon attack on the Arboretum. Until the arboretum is fully restored, goods may be hard to come by. Keep an eye out for traders and new items every month as trade slowly restores.
