Sanguis Clinic
Type Research Hospital
Location Presmarivale

About[edit | edit source]

The Sanguis Clinic is a research hospital located in the town of Presmarivale. The clinic operates both as a functioning hospital for the region and a research institution on the cutting edge of non-magical healing. People across Osugbo with rare, untreatable conditions often brave the journey to the Sanguis Clinic hoping the doctors there will find a breakthrough.

Resources[edit | edit source]

The clinic boasts extensive lab space for the research done by senior doctors. There is a limited capacity for cold storage, as well as a small greenhouse room for growing medicinal plants. An adjoining building houses the Sanguis Clinic's extensive research library, kept strictly off limits to all save authorized clinic staff.

Relationship to the University of Xyrneiros[edit | edit source]

The Sanguis Clinic harbors a mild rivalry with its neighbor in Presmarivale, the University of Xyrneiros. The two inevitably compete over talent and resources due to their proximity, yet hold a mutual respect for one another, and will ultimately cooperate when the need arises. Sanguis researchers typically consider Xyrneiros projects to be frivolous and abstract, while Xyrneiros looks down on the work at Sanguis as limited and mundane.

Notable Breakthroughs[edit | edit source]

One of the clinic's more unusual areas of research has been the creation of non-magical medical devices. These devices could pump and filter a patient's blood, reset their heart rhythm, or force air into their lungs, allowing doctors to save their patients from the brink of death (and even beyond). Though such inventions could undoubtably save lives, the research suffered a critical setback when it was discovered that a clinic researcher had used the machines on a resident of Presmarivale under dubious circumstances.

Lyonesse Thane was found dead in a secluded wing of the clinic. By the state of her body, it was clear she had been hooked up to several of the life-sustaining devices for some time, but the various tubes and wires had all been forcibly ripped free. The Presmarivale authorities launched a formal investigation into the circumstances of her death, but hit a dead end when it was discovered that their main suspect, a researcher named Rainier Moorgrave, had fled town. Word of the gruesome incident leaked to the local papers, causing a scandal amongst Presmarivale and temporarily threatening the clinic's funding. Though Rainier Moorgrave was never found and the details of Lyonesse Thane's death remained mysterious, the study of life-support devices has remained taboo at the Sanguis Clinic ever since.
