Dur'kalak is the sole survivor and proud warrior of the village of Kirak

Physical Appearance[edit | edit source]

Dur'kalak is a 6' 10" lizardfolk, covered in light blue scales with aqua highlights and a yellow underbelly. He wears his ancestral headdress, typical of the warriors from the village of Kirak, and trusts his scales to protect him in battle. His eyes are black with a bright red iris, indicating his destiny to become a fierce warrior for his people.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Not quite socially adept and very out of place within urban environments. He has a burning hatred of dragons and sometimes, his own reflection. He refuses to desecrate graves and tombs when on adventures, and tries his best to persuade his party from doing so, though his talking skills are less than optimal.

History[edit | edit source]

Dur'kalak was once a proud warrior defending his village from all manners of threats on Isonhound. He learned the ways of the forest, just as he learned the ways of war. His family lineage held many great Kirak warriors, including his father, Mal'durtak, who defended the village for 40 years, until he was slain along with his village.

Dur'kalak is a headstrong fighter, and capable of felling even great beasts as the Tyrannosaurus Rex, whose ribs became the shield he now wields. However, the Kiston threat proved to be too much for the warriors of the tribe. One fateful day, a black dragon passed over his home, and sought the riches within the Kirak temple. Slaughtering the entire village to get what it wanted, Dur'kalak was left wounded and disgraced. After adorning some of the last artifacts of his people, he set out to find a new tribe to defend, and honor his ancestors in battle. Driven more by his desire to find purpose, he joins adventuring parties hoping that they would accept him into their tribe. So far, he has been mostly unsuccessful.

In recent adventures, he has killed some of the dragonkin. Creatures such as Lindwurms, which were the closest he's come to a real dragon. He also came into contact with a wizard utilizing the hated Black Dragon as an illusion to control a band of Kobolds. This event marked the closest he has come to taking an innocent life, as the wells of his past quickly brought rage to his ancestors. Through some self reflection on his own beliefs, Dur'kalak was able to quell the rage and remain a very angry lizard. He heard rumors of a group of adventurers felling a great dragon, some of which he knew. He only wished he could have taken part.

As he continued to travel the world, he responded to a call for aid from a caravan of refugees heading from Seglock to Hallasan. Escorting the refugees back to their home, Dur'kalak and his party members learned of a sacred site in which no dragons can attack and which contained a powerful Scryer. The party traveled further North, coming across the camp of Rana Ndore to seek out the Scryer and learn what protects them. Here, Dur'kalak met Grig Staz, another living member of the Kirak tribe. The two lizardfolk then conversed about the attack so many years ago, with Dur'kalak explaining that he, and now Grig, were all that remained of their people. Shortly after this, the party met with the Scryer, and so had several questions asked, and answered. Dur'kalak learned of the approximate location of the Black Dragon which destroyed his village. He will attempt to rally some warriors to his side in order to find a "Burned forest south of the holy site" and seek the hiding Black Dragon. After their meeting with the Scryer, Dur'kalak invited his new kinsman to return to Kirak in pilgrimage, but was declined. He traveled South, heading for his Central Jungle home to plant seeds of the Sun Fern, a plant which grew around Kirak, which were given to him by Grig. He is also worked closely with his party to relocate the Moon Well, the artifact which protected the site from dragon attack.

Following the successful retrieval of the Moon Well, Dur’kalak moved towards the ruins of his home village. He had a pledge to plant the seeds of the Sun Fern, and he had wanted to scavenge any remaining artifacts of his people. The journey was peaceful, and as he entered the jungle he called home, a sense of familiarity and peace washed over him. He traversed the old hunting grounds, crossed the stream bed which acted as the outer defense line, and entered the village of Kirak. Standing before him were the ruins of homes, workshops, and the towering temple, all becoming one with the forest again. Signs of the attack were still present on many of the stone buildings, with acid spatters crating irregular grooves along the stonework. He stopped before the pyramid, digging 8 small holes in a circle around him. In each, he planted a single Sun Fern seed, gave thanks to his ancestors for allowing him to meet one of his own, and covered the seeds. Scavenging through the remains left little to find. The black dragon who now cowers in the burned forest took everything it could, and destroyed that which it could not. Dur’kalak stood, and headed for Seglock, where his new allies were celebrating the installment of the artifact he had helped secure.

The celebration was very different from the fire dances of his people. He get out of place, but his new allies made it better for him. He won a few contests, arm wrestling chief among them. He began to enjoy himself, when an explosion rocked the festival, and he sprang forward with a multitude of heroes. His band of heroes made for the left gate of Seglock University, where they were met with a massive beast blasting across the sky. It devastated the land in a very familiar fashion to what had happened to Kirak some 6 months ago. Acid washed over Dur’kalak, and two of his friends were taken out by the blast. They were brought back to consciousness thanks to some quick actions, but a new creature erupted from the building closest to him. Something mostly Draconic, but with a strange differences, including a head of hair. Not thinking more than keeping this small band safe, Dur’kalak urged them forward in the chase that followed. While Seglock burned, and many fled, the band with him managed to lose this creature by smashing through some buildings. They then chased the creature, heading towards the sounds of battle where city guards were trying to contain the beast. With the night of the party and the aid of some earlier damage, the creature was killed, and Dur’kalak now fears the Moon Pool is lost, and he urgently moves to defend it.

Many months after the attack, Dur'kalak had lost faith in his abilities to defend his allies. Stepping away from adventuring, he was not heard from for weeks, until a group of adventurers cornered the black dragon Thymor'ala, which set Dur'kalak onto the path he was following now. He sprung from the nearby cinder forest, clambering atop what trees remained in an attempt to kill the beast which destroyed his home. Throwing two javelins, he missed, failing on this revenge plot. He then returned to his exile, ashamed for not being able to fell the dragon. While away, he received word that Thymor'ala was once again spotted, this time tainting land which a woman named Mother Love used to gather ingredients for her potions. Upon meeting this woman, Dur'kalak was immediately off put, and didn't trust her as far as he could throw this old woman. But he saw only red for the death of Thymor'ala, and so invaded the hoard without a second thought. It was a tough battle, but Dur'kalak managed to deal some serious damage to his foe, helping his allies kill the dragon. He gathered artifacts from the hoard which were stolen from the temple of his sun god. He felt very little joy in the moment, his sorrow did not change. He was still angry, and so sought to continue slaying these beasts as they came, but he needed to complete a small quest of his own. An atonement for his previous failures, and a showing of respect to his past and how it has changed him.

Over the last month, Dur'kalak returned to his home village, gathering stone to build a small shrine for the artifacts he recovered, attached to the Iron Hawks guild hall. He built the shrine using the stones of village homes, mud from the hunting grounds, and a central tablet from the main chamber of the sun god's temple. He placed the artifacts upon alters and mantles. laying them out in the same manner as in the temple. He added a small holy symbol into the main alter, a winged serpent with feathers instead of flaps backlit by a sun. He dedicated this shrine to the god M'at'akan, the god of life and fire of the Kirak people. Upon finishing the shrine, he began to plan a place for himself there, placing an open stone cask before the main alter, and he is waiting to commission a stone lid for his eventual, and hopefully not bloody, death. Though he wants to fight as long as possible, he knows that he will die, and wants to be buried among the relics of his people, and among the halls of his new friends.
