Ottermas is an druidic/dwarven/Ysgardian celebration is celebrated on the {Date Needed}. Other names for this celebration include: Ótr's Day, Ótr's Mass, Ott's Day, and The Day of Cursed Reparations.
About[edit | edit source]
On the surface, Ottermas appears to be the one day a year that druids everywhere can access the previously unavailable and elusive form of the otter. This ability is granted by the powers of Ysgard in remembrance of the fallen dwarven hero Ótr.
Traditions[edit | edit source]
Druids who utilize their Wild Shape on Ottermas feel an almost compulsion to turn into an otter, and those who willingly observe the holiday are expected to remain as an otter for as long as possible. During this time they are expected to catch and feast on otter foods as a means to pay tribute to Ótr and all of the meals he will miss. Failure to do so is believed to bring bad luck upon the druid for the next year.
One of the controversies with this celebration is that it is not uncommon for observing druids to be killed while in their otter forms by those culturally unaware of the holiday. It became tradition to ask for the druid's otter form weight in gold and magic items, paid to the leader of the druid's circle, as compensation for the druid's loss. In turn this led to an unfortunate tradition of those who had obtained cursed objects to intentionally hunt and kill a druid in their otter form on this day as a means of freeing themselves of those items. This had lead to some circles trying to ban the observation of this holiday, although fighting the compulsion is known to be extremely mentally taxing.
