History[edit | edit source]
Jerimiah Isothorpe has been an adept for many years. By day he's just another cog in this corporate system known as Quelmar. But by night, he's a Shadowrunner. A term used by the corporate to refer to hired hands who take on shady business that should never see the light of day. Has he eliminated a CEO or 2? Has he stolen portfolios from rival companies. His resume doesn't say so. His resume says he's a historian for SotS, the wealthiest, if not the largest, drug rehabilitation program on QuelMar.
This has not been a good week for Jerimiah. Today is the day Jerimiah gets fired. You see. While waiting for the A Train in New Galik City, Jerimiah was robbed.
"That may be the most irresponsible thing anyone in the long history of this company has ever done. You and I both know what was inside that briefcase, Isothorpe. Your mission was to secure the case, not lose it. This was a public venue...no wait....it was LACKPURSE LANE STATION. No doubt there would be cameras posted everywhere, you've exposed yourself and I have no choice but to remove all evidence of our working together."
"And my family sir?"
"Well I think under the circumstances, you can't blame me for ending the terms of the protection program"
"No! Please! No! I'll take the fall! I won't put up a fight! I'll keep my mouth shut! Just please don't do this to them, they don't deserve that!"
"Well I suppose we could make another agreement..."
"Another...Agreement?"
"That case is out there now, we know who would have the inside knowledge of the this company and the means of achieving such a concise heist. He's still out there. We both know if anyone would want to steal that case, it would be him."
"What does that mean for me?"
"You'll have to get it back. There are ways to find him, he never skips town without leaving some mark of presence. Check the taverns. He might even still be here in Galik."
"And if I fail, sir?"
"Consider your family outlaws."
Meanwhile, secure in his own apartment, the Thief had already begun digging through the documents, taking special interest in a children's book about the Founders of Sots. He'd also already taken a look at the Acorn of Far Travel. If the kid's book was right, this acorn contains some magical essence of the fairy forests of old lore. But he hadn't finished the story.
Turning back to the end of the book (he'd already flipped to the final chapter, taking no interest in the stories before then), he began to read again...taking no notice of the shadowy mist that had begun to flood out of the suitcase.
