BACKSTORY:

Gwen Holt - Before the transformation

1. Who were you before?

Gwen was born March 15th to Ted and Louise Holt. She has one older sister named Iris. From a young age Gwen loved to be in the water and learned to swim before she learned to walk. Her parents saw her potential and signed her up for the swim team as soon as they could. Gwen spent every morning in the pool and her only “friends” were other swimmers because she did not have time for anyone else. Her schedule for weekdays was:

5:30 am Wake up

6:00 am Be in the pool

7:30 am Eat breakfast on the way to school

8:00 am School

With carb heavy snacks throughout the day and drinking at least 72 ounces of water during the school day

2:00 pm School swim team practice

4:00 pm Do homework

6:00 pm Dinner with family

7:00 pm Weights and training with private coach

9:00 pm Shower and brush teeth

9:30 pm Go to bed

Her schedule for weekends was:

5:30 am Wake Up

6:00 am Eat breakfast on the way to swim meet

7:00 am Be in the pool

12:00 pm Lunch

2:00 pm Study session with private tutor

5:00 pm Dinner with family

6:30 pm Weights and training with private coach

9:00 pm Shower and brush teeth

9:30 pm Go to bed

2. When did you change? What caused it?

Ted and Louise were cheering Gwen on at her weekly Saturday morning swim meet when they were approached by a woman wearing dark sunglasses and a chic sweater and pants. Gwen was in the middle of freestyle and she caught a glimpse of the woman approaching her parents before she dipped her head back in the water. By the time she was climbing out having come in second she saw the woman and her parents look over at her, nod, and then shake hands. Later that night during family dinner Ted turned to Gwen and announced that she would be participating in a summer program that would help her swimming. Gwen looked up sharply from her chicken breast, broccoli, and rice. “How long will it be? Will I still be able to go to Camp Winnow, like Iris did?” Louise answered, “No sorry sweetie, this program is all summer long. But it is run by a highly esteemed doctor who says she can help you become an elite swimmer! All those practices and sessions will be so worth it when you get on that stage with the gold trophy!” Louise reached out and squeezed Gwen’s hand. Gwen glanced at her sister and Iris just smiled and said, “Camp Winnow is honestly not even that fun. And you know how much mosquitos love you, you would have at least 20 bites within the first three minutes of stepping on the camp site!” Gwen laughed and they talked about school and Iris’ science camp. That night Gwen kept waking up in cold sweats. She kept picturing that woman’s face who talked to her parents, something seemed off about her.

The day after school let out for the summer Gwen was finishing packing her bags for her program. Her mother tucked a container of Gwen’s favorite cookies into her bag and they all had a big group hug. Her mother and father kissed her on the head and Louise shed a couple of tears. “I’m only gone for a couple months mom!” “I know, I know. I just thought I had a couple years until we had to do this for college. I’m gonna miss you so much!” “What am I chopped liver?” Iris announced with a smirk, “at least you can sleep in now! Don’t worry Gwen I will keep them entertained while you are away, even if they have to only have their second favorite daughter in the house.” she winked and pulled Gwen into a tight hug. She whispered, “You are gonna kill it and I am so proud of you, even though you are my younger sister.” she winked again. “Okay kiddo, it looks like the car just pulled up.” Ted announced before pulling Gwen into another tight hug. “Call if you need us, or if you just want to talk. We love you Gwen, now and always.”

That was the last time Gwen saw love in her parents eyes. At the facility Gwen was surrounded by other athletes. The first few days were normal trainings routines where they were hooked up to machines. Then about two weeks into the summer the athletes started disappearing and Gwen ended up alone. That is when she saw the woman again. Dr. Ethel came in and led Gwen to her office, she explained that they were trying something experimental. As she said this her lips pursed, “it has not been perfected yet.” Gwen thought back to the sounds she heard throughout the night that she thought was just the wind. Her back broke out in a cold sweat when Dr. Ethel took off her dark glasses and her eyes were a sickly green. Her breath caught and Gwen took a deep drink of her water. The last thing she saw was Ethel grinning at her, was that a forked tongue? No it couldn’t be. Then she was asleep.

When Gwen awoke she felt heavier but also buoyant. Her skin tingled all over, she felt small ripples of movement around her. She reached out and grabbed at something moving past her. When she looked down she saw a tiny fish in her hand. No, it couldn’t be her hand. This hand was green and scaly and the nails were sharpened and long. She released the struggling fish and spread her hand out. It was webbed. She tried to scream and water entered her mouth. She tried to push up and out of the water because she was going to drown! But no, she was breathing normally. She blinked and felt a slimy texture go over her eyes, very unlike her normal eyelids. She pushed up off of the ground and bulleted towards the light she could see. When she broke the surface she saw the smiling face and glowing eyes of Dr. Ethel.

“Perfection.”

3. Who, outside of the team, is helping you understand your new body?

Gwen broke out of the facility by blasting through the bars around the water source. She swam for her life and eventually made it back to her parents house. She saw her family at the dinner table. Her reflection caught her eye and she immediately backed away, terrified of what she had become.

Gwen called Iris that night and asked her to meet up in the park. “Gwen?” came Iris’ sleepy voice, “It is after midnight, what is going on?” “Please.” “I’ll be right there.”

When Iris arrived, Gwen stayed in the shadows and tried to prepare her sister. When she finally stepped into the dim light of the streetlight, Iris gasped and took a step back. “Please” Gwen pleaded, “I need help” Iris gulped and then took tentative steps towards the creature standing before her. “How do I know?” “That it is me? Well, who else would know that you have a box covered with flamingos under your bed that contains a bottle of alcohol, an adult magazine, and a stash of what I hope if your own baby teeth?” “Oh my god, Gwen.” “Yeah. Can you help me?”

Iris took some swabs of Gwen’s body and went into the school lab to look closer at them.

4. Why don't you just try to hide yourself away?

5. Why do you care about this team?
