Ipos was one of the many Vestiges that inhabited The BackHalls, and the only one not bent on destroying or conquering the multiverse. Instead, Ipos gathered godlike power (like the other Vestiges) in the pursuit of knowledge. While some imply this makes Ipos not unlike a Lich, Ipos disagrees.
History
As a mortal scholar of cosmos, Ipos discovered vestiges and Ymbtry's Blackened Hallmarks long before their rediscovery in the CR era. Although binder lore gives conflicting accounts of Ipos’s race and nation of origin, the legends agree that he was a mighty spellcaster with the power to travel the planes in her pursuit of knowledge.
Although she was interested in all subjects, Ipos had a particular passion for discovering the nature of the planes, magic, and the many demiplanes that existed. Through her study of these topics, Ipos sought to discover the planar order—the set of fundamental laws within which the multiverse operated.
Ipos did a magnificent job with their research, and their discoveries have been passed down through the generations. Yet they left such an incomplete vision of reality that later scholars and explorers had to expand upon their body of work. In the midst of their investigations, Ipos stumbled across vestiges and drowned in the depth of this knowledge. He could not conceive of beings that did not exist in some place, or that could not be reached via the planes or by divination spells. They became obsessed with finding the plane upon which the vestiges resided. They dropped the study of all other topics and threw themselves into the task of finding a way to the realm of the vestiges. No one knows what happened after they made this mission their focus, but the fact that they now exist as a vestige lends credence to the idea that they discovered what they sought.
