M'at'akan (Mah-ta-kahn) is the Kirak god of the Sun, Fire, and Life
Description[edit | edit source]
An incredibly small deity, M'at'akan has a very niche following, not extending very far beyond Lizardfolk, if not the Kirak tribe. M'at'akan is depicted as a serpent with wings of golden feathers. These feathers are what provide the light of the sun as M'at'akan spirals across the sky. The light provided by his feathers grows the forest around Kirak, allowing for ample room to grow food, hunt, and gather building supplies. His body is made of scales of red and orange with black streaks and a golden headdress. According to the stories of the Kirak priests, M'at'akan is around 25-30 feet long with a wingspan of roughly 20 feet.
His holy symbol is a black winged serpent in the center of a golden sun. This symbol is usually carved into an alter or into a temple's holy room and painted using natural paints. For travel, the symbol is a small roundel with the same engraving which is affixed to a headdress by a length of beads about an inch long. It can also be a golden medallion attached to a golden chain, with the black serpent made of inset obsidian. This style of symbol is usually reserved for priests or for village leaders. The colors of the beads are sky blue, yellow, orange, and red, representing the sky, the sun, M'at'akan, and the fire on the ground.
Works[edit | edit source]
M'at'akan gifted the Kirak people with the knowledge of fire building, and gifted them their first fire which burned in the holy room of the central pyramid within Kirak until Thymor'ala destroyed the village. The fire was what remained from a forest fire M'at'akan created to clear the area for the Kirak tribe's home village. He provided this gift in exchange for worship and a temple in his name.
M'at'akan also created the special Sun Fern plants around the Kirak village. These plants absorb his light from the day and emit it at night to help light the areas around the village and ward off nocturnal predators. These ferns were also destroyed in Thymor'ala's attack, leaving Kirak in darkness. Dur'kalak replanted the ferns after his discovery of the Moon Well, and his discovery of Grig Statz, another Kirak lizardfolk.
Worshippers[edit | edit source]
The Kirak people were M'at'akan's main worshippers. They gathered when the sun was at its highest peak in the sky, and placed seven golden treasures into a large pit in the center of the main sanctuary. Every so often, M'at'akan is blocked by his sister, K'iet'ke (Kie-et-kay) *Kirak Moon Goddess* and the world goes dark. During such an eclipse, a single individual is selected and sacrificed to appease K'iet'ke and move her from her brother's path. After the eclipse ends, a feast is held in honor of the two siblings.
