Gustafar is the half-brother and former nemesis of Ben and Sven. He is a blackguard dragonborn in the Fantastical Freeze.

Physical Appearance[edit | edit source]

Gustafar is a green dragonborn, standing at approximately 6 ft 5, though he slouches. He wears a black tattered traveler's robe.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Gustafar is cunning, sly and manipulative, but also has a sense of honor: he is pragmatic in that he will not fight without cause, nor will he kill blood relations, and once he owes a debt, he will not let it go unrepaid. He also has an addictive personality, be it his hunger for power or his hunger for vices.

It remains to be seen if his negative traits are still as strong now that he is trying to redeem himself and go down the straight and narrow.

History[edit | edit source]

Gustafar's parentage is unknown. As a child, he was found on a bloody battlefield during the Mirr Civil War by King Prax, who adopted the orphan and promptly ended his campaign of bloodshed and conquest.

Gustafar enjoyed a life of luxury at Mirr castle and wanted for nothing. However, he knew that he was not of noble blood and would never inherit the throne of Mirr. This was a constant thought in his mind, but he was cared for and therefore tried not to dwell on it too much. Then life in Mirr began to unravel once the aged King Prax took a new queen: Lucinda. With a queen, Prax's attentions shifted away from Gustafar, while he was not mistreated per se, he was constantly ignored and left to his own devices.

One night, while wandering the palace alone with his thoughts, he saw a hooded figure exit Queen Lucinda's chambers. In the darkness, all Gustafar could tell was that it was a dragonborn. Approximately nine months later, the twins Svengette and Caliben were born. Prax's heirs were secured. While Lucinda's infidelities were open secrets in the court of Mirr, the two princes were treated as if they were Prax's flesh and blood and the future rulers of the island kingdom. Again, Gustafar's situation was unaffected, but his resentment continued to brew.

As time went by, Gustafar watched the king wither away. When Prax was finally on his deathbed, Gustafar was not called for nor did he make the effort to speak to him once last time. He watched the child princes Sven and Ben mourn, but did not join them.

When Queen Lucinda was overthrown by the usurper Krislindahl and began her campaign to regain her throne, she decided to send the young princes to the mainland for their safety and so that she would not have to be burdened by them. She assigned Gustafar with the task of protecting them, giving him a great sum of money that she was able to retrieve from the Mirr treasury.

Once on the mainland, Gustafar made sure the twins had just enough for food and shelter, but he would frequent gambling dens and go drinking, whoring, and gaming. One night, he got in a tussle with some lowlifes and, after a fight, the establishment burned down with Gustafar presumed dead. In fact, as the building burned around him, a voice in the flames whispered to him, promising him power and glory, what he had been denied at Mirr. Gustafar saw a hand reach through the flames and he took it.

Gustafar became an undead lord and was given charge of an undead army that would ravage villages at night. For years, he served this mysterious entity until, one day, he was reunited with the adult Ben and Sven, who had been mentored by a self professed holy man named Calder in the ways of being a slayer. Gustafar was able to read Calder's thoughts and knew him to be a hypocrite, and easily killed him in the ensuing battle. Gustafar was also able to mortally wound Ben in this battle. However, Gustafar was fatally stabbed by Sven during this encounter with a blessed blade. As Gustafar faded away, he realized too late that he had made a deal with the wrong entity...whatever god or dark force he had pledged himself to was weak and ineffectual.

In Orbus, Gustafar struck a deal with the Bheara to become a champion and with it have more power and strength...and a promise of revenge against the two princes. For years, he waited as his power grew. When Sven died, Gustafar took the opportunity to haunt Ben's dreams, posing as Sven, hoping that he could trick Ben into taking his hand; with this gesture, Gustafar would pull Ben into Orbus and he would be able to reenter the land of the living. He came close a few times, but it wasn't until Ben was lying, dying on the ground that Gusfar finally tricked Ben into taking his hand. Ben's body was destroyed and Ben's colleagues were plunged into Orbus.

Gustafar returned to the land of the living aware that somehow Sven had escaped Orbus as well. Gustafar knew he could destroy him if he could track him down, but first he needed some help. He accompanied a group of travelers, disguised as Cluny and, after entering the dreamscape, he used his powers to make Edris, a champion of the Bheara, his servant. The two began their quest to hunt down Sven. However, these plans were thwarted when the heroes of Quelmar attacked Orbus, severing the link between Edris and Gustafar. Meanwhile, Gustafar was drawn back to Orbus and had to face Sven, Ben, and a retinue of allies they had made in their journeys. Ben cast a spell on Gustafar that cancelled his own sorcery and was easily defeated by the princes and their friends. In fact, a fatal blood was indeed struck, but, thanks to a favor of the Bheara, he was immediately resurrected, but his powers were still disrupted. Gustafar felt fear, since he knew that if he fell again, his soul would be destroyed. Sven stopped the onslaught against him and revealed that he did not want to kill Gustafar, since he had discovered that he was indeed their half brother; they all three had the same biological father. Gustafar was taken aback by this revelation and, in the confusion, Sven reached out and grabbed Gustafar and teleported him away to safety. Once away from the fray, Gustafar tried to kill Sven, but Sven knocked him unconscious with a single blow. When he regained consciousness, Gustafar asked Sven if it was true that they were half-brothers and Sven revealed that, while he was in the afterlife, it was a discovery that he made. Gustafar remembered the strange dragonborn leaving Lucinda's chamber all those years ago and wondered if that was indeed his father. Gustafar declared that, despite all that he's done, he is not a kinslayer and would not be the one to kill Sven or Ben. Meanwhile, Sven told Gustafar that he could be redeemed. While Gustafar felt this dubious, he did admit that since Sven saved his life, he would accompany the brothers, to prove Sven right or wrong (Ben, meanwhile, was skeptical and not keen on having his former murderer travel with them).

After the battle in Orbus, the link with the Bearah was severed and those that had accepted favors from him were inflicted with a sickness nicknamed SLOBS. All three brothers felt a degree of this, but Gustafar, having been in service of the Bearah so long, was made comatose. He slipped in and out of consciousness, but he remembered Sven as the only one still standing and his declaration of "We will all see Mirr together."

While in his comatose state, he found himself in a strange dream realm, a bed and breakfast, with several heroes of Quelmar. During this time, he was forced to come to terms with himself, all that he's done, and the reasons he became he who he was. During this dream quest, he was able to balance his humors and stabilize his sickness. The sickness was removed entirely via a giant penguin who eats SLOBS and other such inflictions.

Now cured, Gustafar is awakened and ready to work on his redemption by helping his brothers retake their birthright.
