50 Shades of Neigh is a 228 erotica novel, focused on the romance between a wild-shape druid and a dangerous rogue. This was the break-out work of author EL Manes, who has since achieved great success in the genre, renowned for her tongue-in-cheek humor and highly sensual erotic passages. Manes is a pen-name; the author’s true identity is unknown, although she occasionally gives anonymous interviews and there are many popular theories circulating.
Characters[edit | edit source]
Viola Ronan: One of two main characters, Viola is a female half-elf shapeshifting druid. She grew up in a desolate area of the feywild, spending most of her time in animal form. She learned to speak common from an elder fey woman, Luna, who also lived in the area. On her 21st birthday, Luna told her that the feywild was only a small part of the world, and she must finally set out to new lands to expand her horizons and discover her destiny. Luna used magic to propel Viola out of the feywild and into a crowded human city, where she encountered other people for the first time. Much of the book is dedicated to her exploration and education of the city, her history, and her burgeoning sexuality.
Shadow: The second main character, Shadow, is a human rogue, orphaned at a young age. He grew up on the city streets, learning to steal to support himself. As a teenager, he was recruited by the local Thieves Guild, and has quickly become extremely successful. He seems closed-off and gruff, but secretly has a kind heart and often provides for orphaned children he comes across. He meets Viola on her first night in the city and behaves coldly to her, but secretly worries about her naive, trusting nature, and begins to protect her from afar. Eventually she discovers this and they begin a torrid relationship, which is explored throughout the second half of the novel.
Luna: The elder fae woman who lived in the deserted feywild forest where Viola grew up and always watched over her. She knows far more about Viola’s past than she lets on and sends her out into the world.
Wasp: A female tiefling thief who often completes jobs with Shadow. One of the first people Viola shares a sexual encounter with, and later develops a friendship with.
Wulfric Stoneheart: A human paladin and member of the city watch, Wulfric and Shadow have a long-standing contentious rivalry, going back to their childhoods. He ultimately has a heart of gold, and defends Shadow in court. The book ends with hints of potential romance between Wulfric and Wasp.
Scarlett Levine: A female half-elf warlock who quickly befriends Viola, promising to teach her the ways of the city. It is later revealed that she is working for dark, sinister forces and was planning on manipulating Viola into unleashing her true power and attacking the city. At the end of the novel, she flees, vowing to find a new way to enact her dark plans on the world.
