The Quelmar Wiki

Baron Virion Faro was an Eladrin Elf and the Head of the Faro family of Seglock.

About[edit | edit source]

He holds no political position or power, he was given his title of "Baron" early in the Seglock's establishing days to make him feel important and convince him to look the other way as the city began to take shape around his elven estate.

One of his guards was Clarence Poleman, and his groundskeeper was a Firbolg named Kled.

His loyal butler was named Gerald, but was killed in the The Umbral Flood, then being replaced by a loyal butler named Simon.

Manor[edit | edit source]

The Baron's manor had a few important places:

  • Storage Shed
  • A Library
  • A Main Hall
  • The Manor Garden
    • A massive fey cavern located under the manor (and under Seglock in general). The cavern is a strange site to behold as the cavern floor is covered in lush green grass and a small meadow of flowers. Even stranger still is the golden fungus covering the ceiling that is giving off both light and heat. Keeping the subterranean chamber at 78%F-ish. The purpose of this sweet little haven is clear as soon as the party enters the chamber…. Beekeeping!

History[edit | edit source]

The only remaining original inhabitants of this once heavily forested area. Owns a large share of the Sheridan Lumber company. Rich, flamboyant, and self-absorbed Baron Faro earned his wealth and clout by establishing a relationship with the founders of Seglock and involving himself in all of their major ventures.

In 824 PR, Baron Faro’s wife, Genevieve, passed away. Her warmth and benevolence had been instrumental in much of what appeared to be Faro’s philanthropy: she was the true architect of the university scholarships that bore his name. In the wake of her death, he became bitter and withdrawn, unwilling to embrace the goodwill Genevieve had encouraged.

Assault on Seglock[edit | edit source]

People of Seglock, I come to you today with a heavy heart. It has come to my attention that our beloved university has been funding a number of mysterious projects, projects that could be supporting dangerous people in and around our city, such as the heroic guilds known as "The Band of the Iron Hawk" and the "Protectors of the People".

I have spoken with the dean of the university and they assure me that these projects are for the benefit of all. However, I cannot in good conscience continue to support an institution that is putting our city at risk. Therefore, I have decided to cut off all funding from the Faro family to SEglock University.

I know many people object to my decision, and such a strong choice of warrent pushback. I offer the floor those here to change my mind."

After Cheshire's Assault on Seglock, Baron Faro pulled any of his funding and patronage from Seglock University, as a result of Cheshire's connections with the school. To make matters worse, Faro believed that Cheshire (and Tiamat) attacked Seglock specficially because so many heroes of the realm had made it their home. He motioned to have the heroes, such as the Band of the Iron Hawk, evicted.

This put him directly into the crosshairs of The Protectors of the People, a vigilante group of people who set their sites on powerful individuals and the power they abused. This came to a head when the Protectors publically accused the Baron of his evilness during a city hall meeting. After the confrontation, one Harold took it upon himself to begin spreading rumors that the Baron was into unorthodox private activities in his house, and that Harold should instead be elected the new Baron. Despite it not being an elected position...?

After a performance at Tristram's Center for the Living Arts retelling the exploits of the heroes by Tristram Caniedydd, the Baron's disposition slightly altered.

Insomnia[edit | edit source]

Soon a spate of supernatural events began occurring at his manor, culminating in restless nights and eerie hauntings that took shape around Sparklemas. Though Faro himself initially resisted outside help, his butler Gerald sought adventurers to investigate. At midnight, the manor’s grand hall transformed to reflect scenes from his childhood, revealing his past unkindness—such as locking Sir Jereth Leighonen, the head of his household guard, and other staff out in the cold while he celebrated inside. The appearance of Jereth’s vengeful spirit forced Faro to confront the harm he had done.

A second haunting then pulled him into a future ravaged by flames and destruction, brought on by his bitterness and refusal to help in the broader struggles faced by Isonhound. When the adventurers banished the fiery elemental responsible for that apocalyptic vision, Genevieve’s spirit appeared and pleaded with Faro to let go of his resentment, warning that ignoring the realm’s dangers would lead to the very ruin they had just witnessed.

Though he remains proud and skeptical, he softened enough to offer the adventurers a modest payment and conceded that he might consider providing support against the dragons threatening Isonhound. Whether this marks a genuine change in Baron Faro’s outlook or a fleeting concession remains to be seen, but it has cast him in a slightly different light than the arrogant noble who once turned his back on Seglock’s heroes.

The Umbral Flood[edit | edit source]

When Isonhound was flooded with Shadowfell energies, Seglock was attacked by Kennandra and a number of shadow beasts. In this siege, the Baron's son was one of many casualties. As a result, he decided to become an ally to dragon-slayers of Seglock that he previously waged war against. He shared an important secret with them: He knew of a secret Amethyst Dragon that was an old friend of his...Venaleth.

Betraying Venaleth and sending the heroes his way, Baron Faro inadvertedly played a huge role in the success that came when Venaleth then joined the heroes to The Battle of Five Lights.

Kidnapped[edit | edit source]

After slinking away from the battle, the newly purified emerald dragon Feredemius began scouting for new ways to infiltrate and watch the realm of Quelmar, plotting whatever his next moves may be. At one point, he polymorphed into the form of the Baron to investigate the city of Seglock, kidnapping the Baron and stuffing him in a chamber underground.
