Ensign is a Relith Artificer. He/They Pronouns.
Physical Appearance[edit | edit source]
Lighter blue skin. Patches of darker blue spots in tight patterns (like a giraffe pattern). About 7 feet tall. Grey eyes, no nose, long white hair.
Personality[edit | edit source]
Though their prime directive is to return home, they will always try and help others when they can, particularly when it comes to healing. They cannot speak Common well, and often will remain silent or clarify their thoughts with telepathic imagery/emotions.
History[edit | edit source]
The only child of a designated pairing, the entity known as "Ensign" was called Ylatl and born in the servant districts of Reliquari. It was quickly identified by the Relic overseers that Ylatl was a member of the 3rd gender, and so was taken away from their parents so Relith population could continue to be controlled.
They spent their formative years in the Relic administration complex, and received a relatively robust education, choosing a medical path. Their natural empathy, emphasized by their innate psychic empathy introduced them to the difficulties the Relith suffered under Relic servitude.
When the Relic-Cooprative War broke out, Ylatl was conscripted into an infantry division under the command of the brutal Relic Dragon Naga'noth. During the large and bloody conflict on Zatar IV, Ylatl's medical unit was captured by Cooperative forces. Liberated from their relic oppressors, Ylatl defected and offered to join the cooperative forces fighting against the empire. Though it took some time to earn the trust of the Cooperative, Ylatl was eventually deployed as a field medic.
While Ylatl fought and served as an armed front line medic, he fought in several engagements. It was in the trenches of Merit XII that he met the stubborn and persuasive human Valeria Saldani. When the war broke out, Saldani skipped the last 2 months of officer training to join the fight. Taking a critical injury from Relic orbital bombardment, Saldani's life was saved by Ylatl, and they quickly became fast friends. Ylatl was right behind every one of Saldani's impulsive and risky schemes, ready to help with medical and fire support.
Receiving several field commendations, Saldani was given a special assignment, and quickly enlisted Ylatl. It was an infiltration of Relith to support a rising rebellion against the empire. A team of commandos lead by Saldani and supported by Ylatl was smuggled to the frozen planet and quickly made contact with several splintered resistance groups, helping to organize them into a single force. They fought there for 2 years, and were eventually able to destabilize the administrative systems enough to allow Cooperative forces to land and liberate the planet.
Several years after the fall of the relic empire, Ylatl joined the Stellar Navy's officer training corp for medicine, quickly completing their classes. Straight out of academy, Ylatl was requested to join a brand new exploratory vessel, the CSN Sextant, captained by their old friend Saldani.
The Sextant was designed to explore the yet unexplored and dangerous Amittere Nebula using new knowledge and experimental technology recovered from the Relic Empire. Its original commission was for a 5 year exploratory journey, to map what they could and discover what strange creatures might wait within the nebula before returning to present their findings to the Cooperative. About a year and a half in, The Sextant approached what it believed to be a star deep in Astral Space, but what they discovered could only be described as a door. Through the door, a lone planet brimming with fantastic life.
The Captain as well as a landing team transported to the planet, but during their initial scans, the team was attacked by a great red dragon. Saldani ordered an emergency transport, and half of the landing team were left charred on the planet's surface. A young goat-herder had been watching nearby, and found one body, charred but alive. He brought the body of Ylatl, still clinging to life, back to the village where they were nursed back to health. When they recovered enough to speak, it was soon discovered that they did not speak the language, so the boy referred to Ylatl with the only word he remembered from the strange beings who appeared on the planet, "Ensign".
Ensign took to liking that name, and quickly formed a rudimentary construction of the local language. Their years making do with what they could in the trenches of the war came in handy as they resourcefully adapted and constructed new versions of their technology.
Now, exploring the world, Ylatl will help who they can in an attempt to return to their lost crew.

Attacks and Weapons [edit | edit source]
Though they prefer not to have to fight, Ensign has modified his Cooperative standard issue Beam Pistol to have several different beam settings. In addition, Ensign will sometimes use their chemistry knowledge to develop improvised explosives with curious reactions.
