Boros was a 19-year old Tiefling Sorlock expat of Crooks' Creek, former Wizened Elder of the Clan of Auton, seeking knowledge, vengeance, freedom, and drink.
Physical Appearance[edit | edit source]
Tall for a human, short for a Tiefling. A lithe, but somewhat wide gentleman, his eyes of pure silver unsettled to even the most kind-hearted of folks. He wore the grizzled beard of a sailor, coiffed hair of the slyest merchants, and a flashy black leather coat that screamed, "Look at me!". One hand nigh always occupied with a pen to scribble idle thoughts, the other whatever he was swilling down at the moment.
Personality[edit | edit source]
The only thing quicker than his pour behind the tap of a keg is his tongue, an old survival tactic from the wastes of Crook's Creek. Then again, everything was a ploy to survive there.
History[edit | edit source]
Boros was born to unknown parents; typical to a Tiefling, they had abandoned him at birth for his demonic heritage, yet he held no ill will toward them. They most likely were underlings to one or two of the Families, and couldn't afford to raise a child even together, or couldn't stay together for fear of gang-style retribution. It was common enough, even a few of the vicious whelps he called neighbors on his dilapidated street told similar stories while he was a child. And telling stories was commonplace; escapism a permanent in the wastes, whether it be hard drink or common combustible. Their favorite language for this was Infernal; it's harsh tones and rough phrasing perfect for the violent battles that they slung words about.
One of the ways that Boros got by while living on the streets, when he wasn't telling stories or reading, was by working repairing buildings on the streets he travelled. He'd make some coin or earn some food or other valuables he could trade and barter with, making sure to avoid the Five Families of Crooks' Creek's territory unless he brought a few friends or his working tools. It wasn't a prosperous life, but he could afford staples and a few luxuries for him and his friends; some books for him, things to tinker with and magical gee-gaws for the rest.
Boros met Jeb on a job, working on the facade of the Chateau Non Loft. The elder took a liking to the scrappy young Tiefling, and decided to invite him within. Sure, getting his fill of free food and drink was always appreciated, but there was a further hunger within him that Jeb saw; a resentment, anger, a desire to bring change but a deep feeling of powerlessness blocking it. The boy was sick of living his life in fear.
So Jeb pulled the boy aside, looked into his startling silver eyes, much like his own gold eyes, and asked him one question:
"Do you want to be free?"
Boros had never nodded as fast as he did then.
Languages[edit | edit source]
Boros speaks Common usually, but grew up switching between Infernal and Common on the streets of Crooks' Creek, and learned Draconic after leaving home.
Powers and Abilities[edit | edit source]
Like any self-respecting Warlock, his main form of attack is Eldritch Blast. However as a Pact of the Undead Warlock, he also commonly evokes an aspect of Jeb's power through his Form of Dread.
He views knowledge as power, and as a result will devour nearly any book he can get his hands on. He can inscribe rituals into his Book of Shadows, a tome crafted to look eerily reminiscent of Jeb's favorite textbook to lecture out of, although finding the money to grab the inks can be a pain.
An exploratory venture into the Shadow Forges led to an awakening of sorts for Boros. After straying from the group's and his own intent of taking out Horatio after being struck with a need to collect as many books as physically possible, something called out to him. It could have been whispers from Jeb, from the Shadow Forges, or both, but Boros left changed. A font of shadowy magic had pooled within him, although why was still a total mystery. That, and with a neat, shadowy hammer that he could 'bloop' in and out of existence. That was cool.
Boros, after a cavalcade of conflicts with others within the Greedy Greeners, in what was probably not his smartest moment, left the group and made his way back home into Pteris. In the middle of the night, he returned to Chateau Non Loft, left his belongings in the entrance, and successfully made his way to "Green and Greedy" Graggy's hideout. He really didn't know why he started with him, but somehow it felt symbolic. In a not-entirely-intentional kamikaze move, Boros was able to remove Graggy and his top men from their position in Crook's Creek. And their position in the realm of Quelmar. Unfortunately for Boros, who died with a wide grin on his face, and for everyone else, Graggy had a plan in case he was ever deposed; his son, "Greener and Greedier" Craggy would take over, to everyone's chagrin.
Even worse for the Clan of Auton, they had no backup prepared in case Boros died, as Boros essentially left straight away once called by Jeb. However, there was a failsafe, devised by the Founder of the Clan at its inception. Boros, in the tradition of Wizened Elders, joined his teacher Jeb, his new pact-bound: the Protoforged being, Vessel.
The story between Boros and Vessel is expanded upon in Boot Sequence.
