Loxos (sometimes called Loxodon, Pachydan, or other elephantine names) are a race of elephant people found all over Quelmar, often in varying cultures. They hum or chant in sonorous tones and move slowly or sit in perfect stillness. If provoked to action, loxos are true terrors- bellowing with rage, trumpeting and flapping their ears. Their serene wisdom, fierce loyalty, and unwavering conviction are tremendous assets to their parties.
History[edit | edit source]
According to one story told at the Hummintru tribe, the Loxo are the descendants of the ancients Mammoths that the Frost Giants rode astride in their attempts to take over Quelmar in The Plane Wars. While far-fetched, it does offer one explanation of the tribe's devout connection to the Ysgardsil roots that it built itself around.
Others are convinced that the Loxo are the descendants of ancient Lucafolk, a subrace of Beastfolk not from Ysgard, but neighboring Beastlands.
Feud With Dragons[edit | edit source]
Since the dawn of time, Dragons have been said to have an ongoing feud with the elephantine creatures and people of the realm. Historically even when the realm was young, some Loxos claim it was the elephants who were the original slayers of Dragons.
"It was said in ancient conflicts, the Dragon would impale the elephant and in this conflict they die:
both the one and the other.
The elephant he falls down dead as conquered,
and with his heavy weight crusheth and squeezeth the Dragon that is wound and wreathed about it" - Loxo Mythology
Though based on mythology, some scholars have asserted that Dragons tend to desire elephantine blood over other creatures, perhaps because it runs exceedingly cold for mammals, and thereby refreshes a parched Dragon. Dragons have been seen in written historical accounts to lay at the bottom of lakes and surprise elephants by jumping up and sucking them dry of blood (but still sometimes finding themselves under the dead beast). Based on this info, many agree that Dragons likely squabbled with elephants for as long as both creatures coexisted.
