Zariel is an Archdevil and the Second Ruler of Duumal, the First Layer of The Ten Hells.

History

Zariel's documented presence in Quelmar began with her as the ruler of Duumal up until 246 BR when she was dethroned at the end of the First Infernal Emergence and imprisoned inside a magma-filled demiplane of Carceri. She would remain there until 750 BR when Leif, Mireille, Verglas, and Bowz—adventurers from Icewind Dale—stumbled into a teleportation circle located in the necropolis of Ythrin, which transported them to the demiplane where Zariel had been imprisoned. Upon discovering the intrusion, Zariel sent her winged minions to kidnap Bowz—Verglas' baby Dragon Turtle ward—and forced the adventurers to watch as she used Bowz as the key in a ritual to escape her imprisonment. The ritual left Bowz with a tattooed glyph on his shoulder and Zariel successfully fled to the Material Plane.

Following her escape, Zariel began planting the seeds of her plans to raise an army who would fight for her in the ongoing Blood War between Devils and Demons—working primarily in Pteris to corrupt mortal bloodlines with her Infernal influence using contracts and blood pacts. Her efforts gave rise to several generations of Tieflings in Pteris owing their Internal heritage to Zariel, due to a relative who made a pact with her at some point in their bloodlines. Many of these Tieflings—revolting against the mortal society which feared and excluded them—joined Zariel's army in The Ten Hells, whereas some—such as Maverick the social worker—found other callings in life which helped them to persevere in spite of the discrimination they frequently faced.
