Aivan Factorovich is a warforged sorcerer from Mechanus and a playable character in The Paragon Protocol.

Physical Appearance[edit | edit source]

Aivan is a 6 foot tall warforged man made of several different metals, with golden- and bronze-colored sections of his body. By default his eyes glow dark blue, and his face is light blue, but with some time in the Hells, they have red and purple rings as well, which he sometimes hides with sunglasses. He also has a devilish fork icon appearing sometimes when he speaks, and his feet have turned into silver hooves after gaining levels of infernal corruption.

Aivan generally wears a golden-brown cloak that has patches of wood and metal, reflecting his time on the run. He also has now-tattered gears on his shoulders, indicating his former rank in law enforcement in Mechanus. When he uses magic, gears and clocks sometimes appear around himself or his target, reflecting his origin, but they have been ticking out of time lately as he grows less connected to his homeland.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Aivan is somewhat serious, as he is from a plane of lawful neutrality and was built to work in law enforcement, but he is rather warm and friendly given that background. If possible, he tries to talk his way out of some situations before resorting to violence, but if fights break out, he makes sure to support his friends as he's able. He likes the occasional pun, and he doesn't really like smoking or drinking, not for health reasons, but because they simply don't do anything for him as he's made of metal. He can taste food and drink, an ability programmed into him so he could enforce food safety laws.

While he's initially somewhat judgmental towards most devils and demons, he's realized he needs to work with some of them and pick his battles in the Hells, and also that some people there don't have the worst aims.

History[edit | edit source]

Aivan was assembled at the Clockheed Modron facility in Mechanus, a plane of lawful neutrality and theoretically perfect harmony. His builder, who went by the name "Geerio" also assembled his sister Roberta and several other warforged soldiers.

Aivan and Roberta worked in law enforcement in Mechanus, where he led a unit of casters, and she led a unit of fighters. Although most beings in Mechanus followed the rules at all times, some conflicts would occasionally happen nonetheless, especially involving visitors from other planes. Nearly everyone in Mechanus follows their orders at all times, as given by the Axiom and the Inevitables, but there is some degree of sentience nonetheless; programming sentience makes it more possible for warforged beings to wield magic and have charisma, which helps Aivan be a sorcerer and Roberta be a paladin.

He had several friends and neighbors in Mechanus, as few of whom were looked down upon for occasionally thinking for themselves as well, with other robotic names like Aida, Aimelda, and Romulus.

Like them, Aivan was more able to think for himself more and realize some orders were wrong.

One day, two children practicing magic accidentally plane shifted to Mechanus from the Material Plane, where they wound up in a restricted area in Clockheed's facility. Aivan was ordered to capture them, and they would surely be executed for their crime of breaking into such a secretive facility. Aivan realized this was wrong, helping them flee instead. He and the children fled to the neighboring plane, Arcadia, and in fleeing ran out of his magic for the day.

He was given shelter by a much older warforged who had also left Mechanus centuries ago: Mechaela, who now works as the Postmaster General of Arcadia. After recovering, Aivan used Banishment to send the children home, just as enforcers from Mechanus arrived to capture them. When it seemed that Aivan was going to be arrested and reprogrammed, one of Gabriel's angels appeared to summon him for an important mission as part of the Paragon Protocol.

Read The Story of the Paragon Protocol to follow Aivan's story.

After his long adventures across the planes, Aivan would return to Arcadia and use his new magic to create a new domain in Arcadia, the land of Highgear and the grand city of Machairi Fearas, a place for free constructs and all peoples. Aivan would guide the city in its infant years and continue his research in restoring the Modraheed. But the long years of time eventually caught up to Aivan, and used the last of his magic to cast Wish, wishing that his city would remain protected. This wish transformed him into the spiritual guardian of Highgear, manifesting through his sorcerer's focus, the Staff of Gears.

Relationships[edit | edit source]

The Hellraisers[edit | edit source]

ROBerta

ROBerta[edit | edit source]

ROBerta was constructed in the neighboring assembly line to Aivan at Clockheed. She lives in Mechanus, and used to work alongside Aivan in Mechanus law enforcement. She rose through the ranks and she became Captain of the Martial Division.

Aivan's Notes: "I would imagine she is somewhat disappointed in me, but I never actually saw her on the day that I fled. She is a good friend about whom I am concerned, and I hope she is not sent to pursue me. She occasionally also seemed critical of some rules, but we were not allowed to voice dissent, so I do not know her thoughts on this matter."

After Aivan fled Mechanus after rescuing Julie and Julio, ROBerta was sent to hunt him down along with a small strike force of Mechanus enforcers. They first attempted to apprehend Aivan in the city of Dis, and then later in the Bronze Citadel where Aivan saved ROBerta's life from devils.

ROBerta then joined Aivan on his journeys through the Hells wanting to keep him safe, since Mechanus had sent an Inevitable into the Hells. She temporarily broke down after learning the truth of Mechanus' origin and later joined in the final fight against the risen goddess Othea.

MECHaela

MECHaela[edit | edit source]

MECHaela is the postmaster general of Arcadia. She is a fellow rogue Modron and met Aivan when he was fleeing Mechanus with Julie and Julio. She let Aivan stay at her post office and gave him work until he eventually left to perform a mission for the archangel Gabriel.

After Aivan returned, he helped MECHaela expand her operations across Arcadia and even into other planes.

Julie and Julio[edit | edit source]

Julie and Julio were two young apprentice mages who accidentally plane shifted to Mechanus and ran afoul of Mechanus' struct laws. Aivan managed to save them and smuggle them into the neighboring plane of Arcadia where they could find refuge. They recieved further protection when Aivan got the archangel Gabriel to promise to extend Mt. Celestia's protections to both of the young human wizards

Belphegor[edit | edit source]

Belphegor is a infernal engineer from the Ten Hells who had infiltrated Mechanus under the guise of an elf named "Geerio." He worked in the Clockheed Modron factory in Mechanus and was responsible for constructing both Aivan and Roberta.

During their travels through the Hells, Aivan discovered Geerio's true identity, accusing the Devil of infecting Mechanus with his infernal influence. Belphegor denied such accusations, stating that he only went to Mechanus only to learn from the Modrons so he could improve his own designs.

Belphegor later aided the Hellraisers in traveling to Mechanus so they could stop the Inevitable sent from Mechanus. But in return he wanted the party to aqquire him Dispater's Ruby Heart which gave Dispater control over the city. With belphegor's help the hellraisers killed Dispater, but instead took the Ruby Heart for themselves so that they could use it to stop the giant cultists, the Ordained. Enraged, Belphegor began to hunt the party down, confronting Aivan in Mechanus during the battle against Othea, only for his war machine to be destroyed and him being tossed away.

Afterwards Aivan would hunt Belphegor down and bring him to trial in a Mechanus tribunal where Belphegor was judged for his crimes.

Sarah Singe[edit | edit source]

Sarah Singe is a young Fire Genasi woman working at the Garden of Pleasures who formed a bond with Aivan during his time at the gardens. Aivan promised to later return and free her from her servitude to the efreeti Dalia Embervale.

After the conclusion of his adventures in the Hells, Aivan returned to the gardens and was able to negotiate for Sarah's freedom. Afterwards, the both traveled the planes together and lovingly would spend the rest of their days together.

Languages[edit | edit source]

Aivan speaks Common, Deep Speech, Celestial, and Elvish (most of which are not helpful in the Hells).

Powers and Abilities[edit | edit source]

Aivan is a clockwork soul sorcerer who mostly has support spells that were useful for crowd control in his duties in Mechanus, though this has begun to change as his adventure continues.

Attacks and Weapons [edit | edit source]

Aivan is not great with weapons. He wasn't built for that. He has a dagger and knows Booming Blade.
