Esau is an elan and mysterious party in several of Quelmar's historical events.
About
Esau is assumed to be elan despite no real confirmation due to his longevity, living for what appears to be thousands of years. Esau was said to have some sort of connection with a force known as Tharizdun. Esau is said to have lived and operated out of Osugbo for his early life, which might explain why he seemingly did not care to cause chaos down south in Amusa, famously the location of The Kingdom of Xender Pleth.
Esau's Success
In 138 PR, Esau took it upon himself to summon powerful devils to the surface to protect Amusa from Orcus and his minions who have taken residence, marking the official end of the Demonic Infiltration. This involved his direct interaction with Asmodeus, and caused a year of havoc in Amusa. Esau and the results of his actions were eventually stopped by Xender Pleth in 139 PR.
In Esau's final confrontation with Xender, words were exchanged along with blows, and it is forever unknown what Esau told Xender as he was struck down, but according to the final testimony of Xender Pleth, discovered deep in the sands of the island Cof, Xender knew that Esau would be returning at "The End of Days", where he "awaits its release"
Between Days
The name "Esau" appeared on the manifesto of The Choking Cockatrice, and it could be that the very same Esau traveled to the island Cof on the same fateful trip as The Best Around.
Esau made one in-person appearance so far, appearing in one session of Towson Tabletop in 795 PR, where he approached and brokered a deal with a barbed devil known as Callum. This cameo took place in Nessus, one of the Ten Hells, meaning that between his Success in Amusa and his return at the end of days, he was seemingly in hell.
Esau's Return
At the end of the PR era, after the Fracturing of the Weave, Esau returned.
Unanswered Questions about Esau
- Where did he come from?
- Who is Tharizdun? What is his relationship to Esau?
- How was he able to single-handedly summon an army of devils to Quelmar? Let alone strike a deal with Asmodeus himself?
- What was the deal he struck with Asmodeus? Why would Satan himself agree to help fight off demons in Quelmar, in return for WHAT? What can one man offer?
- Why did he know correctly that he would return at the end of the era, and possibly that the World Breaker was to be released then? His warnings to Xender happened 1100 years early.
- Where did he go after his confrontation with Xender? Was he in hell the whole time?
- Was he a prophet?
- If so, what other prophecies may he have made?
Behind the Screen
- Esau is Quelmar's oldest and biggest bad, appearing in the same first notes that DM James used to plan his first campaign. Everything involving Esau was scrapped and replaced with subplots involving Vecna and The Tovag Baragu, but somehow over the last decade Esau has shown up in writing and (briefly) in person, serving some sort of purpose not unlike Thanos in the MCU, teased for years and years.
