Melvin
About
The changing rogue known to many as “Melvin” is a merchant who travels Quelmar searching for notable goods.
Little is known about the rogue, as few come to know him very well. While a changeling, he prefers to take the form of an unassuming old human under then name Melvin. He occasionally has been referred to by the name Ditto, though it is unclear if this is his given name. According to the rogue, he is a merchant of some repute and owns a shop somewhere on Quelmar, which is maintained by one of the very few people who has seen his true form. At some point, the rogue had an unfortunate encounter with a reptilian beast that left a scar on his left ankle. The scar remains when he shapeshifts. The rogue also has a thing for cats.
History
Ancients Alive
While traveling, Melvin happened upon Andif, Medrash, and Jedit, and took a particular liking to Jedit’s panther companion. Together, the group rescued Shalia Redmane, though Melvin remains dubious of Medrash to this day, as the lair of Shalia’s captor was unexpected empty at Medrash’s suspicious claim. After the rescue, Melvin opted to travel with Jedit, as the Tabaxi seemed relatively trustworthy, was on a quest that would surely reveal treasures, and seemed to have a knack for acquiring more cats.
The rogue has been known to take the form of his companions and enemies. On one notable occasion, he took the form of Flynn in an attempt to sabotage the contest to select the new Yeoman of Nestle (an event where he also killed several sheep). He also took the form of Edna to parlay with the ice sorceress Frori and later the form of Frori to (unsuccessfully) confuse the paladin.
Much to his chagrin, given his wariness of reptilian beasts, the rogue met the dragon Tenorixian on multiple occasions. The first was the result of being stabbed with the Sorcyst Blade in an attempt to flee the mysterious paladin who, using the Wand of the Spout to take the form of a water elemental, sank the ship he was traveling on. In Tenorixian’s lair, he learned of the four powerful artifacts and also took pity on and looked over Edna, who, at the time, was cursed with low intelligence.
His second encounter with Tenorixian was more grim and perhaps the result of his unfortunate choice. He and several others were investigating a cave thought to be in use by the paladin. After some incredible sneaking, the rogue decided to jump the paladin—encased in a sphere of water—to obtain the Wand of the Spout. This attempt failed miserably, and the desperate attempt at survival led to Jedit using the Sorcyst Blade to send the paladin to Tenorixian’s lair. Because Medrash insisted on following so quickly, Melvin and his companions soon followed to witness the demise of the mighty dragon. The lair soon collapsed, but Melvin and his companions managed to escape without losing any of the artifacts.
In the final battle against the paladin and his allies, Melvin wielded the Staff of the Marsh. Although he was sorely tempted to keep the staff—and return Grindseed’s copy of the staff instead—he decided the fate of Quelmar would be better served with the artifact’s destruction.
Melvin later made off with serious gold as a result of the team’s actions, including by selling Ynnis’s book and by pocketing more than his share of reward money from the lords of Galik.

Jedit
About
Jedit the outlander ranger carries a grass flute and keeps a panther companion, Panthero. He left his homeland hoping to regain an important artifact that was stolen from his clan—the Staff of the Ark, which houses a pocket paradise for his menagerie of animals and, occasionally, his traveling companions.
History
Ancients Alive
On his search for the staff, Jedit met the changing Melvin and several others, who helped save Shalia Redmane and several cats. His cats took a liking to Melvin, who seemed keen to accompany Jedit on his continuing quest. Jedit’s quest took him to the town of Nestle, where he believed the staff had come to reside after a series of trades. Although he nearly won the contest to become the town’s new Yeoman—including after some deceptive shapeshifting and sheep killing by Melvin—he was ultimately unsuccessful. However, the victor, Flynn, turned over his new title on several conditions, including that Jedit receive the staff. Jedit’s first act was to rescue a sheep from the contest, which now lives in the staff’s pocket paradise.
Jedit continued to travel with Melvin, at one point finding himself underwater both to search for treasure and end Froiri’s frozen winter. There he uncovered the Orb of Gales, though its true identity remained a mystery for some time.
After the mysterious paladin sunk the ship he was traveling on, Jedit rescued a camel and a hippogriff with his staff. On the shore, Froiri gave him the Sorcyst Blade and begged him to stab all his companions with it. After his companion’s poor attempt at fighting the paladin, he acquiesced, and they found themselves at the lair of the dragon Tenorixian. There he learned the truth of the orb but was also cursed by Tenorixian’s treasure.
After following a tip to the paladin’s location, Jedit and several companions unwisely attempted to wrestle the wand from the sleeping paladin. In an attempt to save Melvin’s life, Jedit used the Sorcyst Blade to send the paladin to Tenorixian’s lair. Jedit and his companions soon followed, only to find that the mighty dragon had been defeated. As the lair collapsed, Jedit escaped on his hippogriff, managing to keep hold on the orb. Later, Jedit returned to the Paladin’s cave in hopes of sending him to a favorable battle location with the Sorcyst Blade, only to meet a different adversary. Despite the deception, the companions ultimately defeated the paladin and his allies.
After the fiery celebration of Ynnis’s book about the companion’s adventures, Jedit encountered three abandoned kittens, which on this day of Catster could speak in common. Thanks to Melvin’s rescued book sale documents, the pair tracked down the cat-hoarder owner and Jedit rescued 37 cats with his staff. He also agreed to allow Caoilfhoinn, in her cat form, to watch over the three orphaned kittens and provide animal therapy in the staff.
